You mean the engine management light....codes will be logged for the fault, so when you get the code reader we will have a better insight into what is going on.

It will definitely be linked to the faults.

A yellow light in the rev counter and after looking in the manual it says catalytic converter.

Yep mk6 manuals call this catalytic converter light - incorrectly so (a throw back from times when there was a dedicated cat light). It is an EML - engine management light.

It comes on for any, deemed serious, issues with the engine - ironically it's almost never anything to do with the catalytic converter. It will come on for misfires, turbo issues, vacuum leaks, boost leaks, evap emmisions issues, various sensor or actuator faults as well as O2 sensor catalyst related faults etc, codes will be logged and this light will stay on.

If it flashes and goes off its usually misfires detected. If it stays on then it could be literally anything to do with the engine and its ancillaries - only a code scan will tell you why.

Oh and found a recall sticker inside of the door. Recall code 2454 done in 2010 about 5 months after the car was first registered.

Ah, so it's a 118TSI, with the twincharger (turbocharged and supercharged) 118kw engine? Hmm, that doesn't bode well. Have a read through this thread:

Ok at work so can't read properly till I get home but there's a lot of talk in the early pages about lack of compression and this car def don't lack compression imo as it idles fine and goes VERY well for a 1.4ltr car. As I say only read the first couple of pages but yeah don't seem relevant to my problems from first glance.

No, your problem is not related to the 24S4 campaign - your engine hasn't blown up. But the 118TSI is generally considered a fairly risky proposition because of these issues, so it's worth your while being aware of them.

    Ok the latest,

When driving it yesterday it was doing the 'not gonna go past 3,000rpm' game and I showed the OH as we was driving along, and how to get past it. Today she comes home and explains that is def what it does when she has trouble with it, and as I told her if you just let off the throttle the car will change up a gear and all is good. You can actually drive the car well without going over 3,000rpm but it's just that time when you want to kick down to overtake or something that it's gonna be a problem. As to why it holds 3,000rpm randomly and intermittently is anyone's guess at this stage still!

Code reader should arrive any day, but not sure if that's even gonna give me the answer!

Possible turbo, supercharger flap or mechatronic issue. If it is trying to get over 3000rpm but can't get there and is loosing puff then could be a high pressure pump also.

Or it could be something completely different.
