Hmmm - I just looked up on carsales and you're right, it is a 7sp... so there you go, 340NM from a gearbox which apparently is only spec'd for 250NMI wonder whether Volkswagen have changed anything in it, like the clutches etc?

Hmmm - maybe it's a completey different gearbox than the 7sp in the Golf then!
Audi has a 7 speed DSG capable of handling big torque loads, designed for longitudinally mounted engines; here's a link:

Could it be that? A transporter is RWD or 4WD I believe, and vans usually have longitudinally mounted engines.

This is good news for me as I've delayed getting the APR stage 1 (worried about the torque increase well above 250Nm)
I now feel reasonably confident that the 7 speed DSG can handle the increased torque (on occasions).
Combined with the feedback from other TSI owners that have had the ECU flash and have reported no probs with the DSG, then Im happy to "have a go"

Sorry Brian, I incorrectly thought the Transporter had the same 7sp DSG as the Golf, but it doesn't - it's the Audi 7sp S Tronic for longitudinally oriented motors. It's rated for 550NM and 9,000rpm.
Having said that, the 6sp DSG in the Golf was rated for 350NM and has been used in tens of thousands of 400NM+ Stage I tunes around the world over the past 5 or so years, and even 500NM+ Stage III tunes in the S3 and GTI over the past 3 years...
Although the 7sp DSG in the Golf is much newer, don't think the Stage I tunes go beyond the capabilities it offers. There hasn't been any reports of higher rates of issues/failures on tuned cars vs stock cars.
Dropped the GTI off at VW Southport this morning for the surgery, got a nice suprise when they gave me a jetta with leather as my loan vehicle instead of the transporter van I was earlier told I would be getting. Picking up the GTI at the end of the day, will report back with hopefully good news.

The new gearbox is in, complete with replacement mechatronics unit, and I could not be happier. The gear change felt completely different in the previous gearbox, it wasnt 'bad' but this new unit feels more precise and noticeably quicker on the down-shift. Another major change is the fact that the car now rev-matches in Manual and Sports mode on the downshift which it never did before and could explain the clunk.
I thought the DSG was pretty good before, now I think it's simply brilliant, D mode feels very similar to the previous box but the change into 1st when slowing down is much smoother. Sports mode and manual are stunning, the rev-matching sounds and feels amazing, I can approach corners with more confidence now. Makes me realize what I have been missing over the previous months.
I really couldn't have hoped for a better result.

That's great to hear Skitz. I'm surprised that the previous gearbox wasn't doing the rev matching. That must've made it really easy for the service techs to diagnose![]()
