Ok I had a chat with the service assistant looking after my car, he couldnt (or wouldn't) go into much detail about the exact issue. The short version was that the DSG system is a sealed / 'non-servicable' component by dealers and it was given the go ahead to replace the entire gearbox and mechatronics. This is the first occurrence of this issue at the Gold Coast VW but was told it could potentially be a bad batch of DSGs hence the replacement. The service assistant suggested that it could be a known issue to VW Australia thus the willingness to replace the entire unit.
I would advise anyone with a DSG box in a Mk6 to give it a good run in S-mode while it's still in warranty. The gearbox and mechatronics unit is a $14,000 replacement not including labour. I don't want to be an alarmist but the only reason I suspected a problem with the DSG in the first place was because of a forum post.
thanks
Thanks for the update Skitz. You've got a 118TSI right?
The mechatronics on the DSGs (both 6 and 7) is sealed and therefore entirely replaced. But at least on the 6sp DSG the actual "gearbox" section isn't a sealed unit. I don't have the service manual for the 7sp, and I know that VW worked a lot to make this less complex and cheaper to maintain and build, so maybe the 7sp is sealed.
As for the gearbox and mechatronics being a $14k replacement. That figure was thrown around several years ago when the MKV GTI first came out and was for the 6sp version. I would be extremely surprised if 5 years later, for the 7sp version, that it's still that figure (any dealers able to confirm or deny this?)
hey mate, I'm in a Mk6 GTI. The service assistant told me that my 6sp DSG was a sealed unit and quote 'not service-able by any dealer'. I'm not sure if what he was telling me was correct but you seem to have a much greater understanding of the vehicle than myself. Regarding the replacement cost, again it was something that came out of his mouth.
Yeah fair enough... even though it could be opened up, they're pretty sensitive that it's usually best not to. Plus, the more that even up back at VW Germany untouched, the better. Will help them improve the design for future gearboxes.
Agreed, I'm booked in for friday 16th for the replacement. I will keep the thread up to date on developments.
Side note, drove the 103kw diesel Transporter with DSG as my loan car yesterday and I was quite suprised how well it went for a van. As part of my job I get to drive quite a few new cars and the Transporter was nicer to drive than some passenger vehicles I've been in lately. Just thought that was interesting
Well, the 103kw diesel would have the same DSG as in the GTI! hehe
