No, it's a service cost - like changing the oil. Use your extended warranty to pay for the replacement mechatronics.

For those of you who have had these DSG problems intermittently, when is it most likely to happen?

My Octavia will be out of warranty in July (Skoda haven't extended the drivetrain warranty to 5 years even though it's the same DQ200 unit used by VW ) so I need to take the car to the dealer WHILE it is misbehaving so they can see that it's happening. I've only had the bad shudders in D1/D2 a few times since I've owned the car (bought it used in December last year) and don't really know how to make it happen on demand. The times it has been a problem were when I've been driving for over half an hour in a fair bit in traffic - lots of stop/start and crawling along. I had some spare time today and drove around for about 2 hours near the dealer trying to induce DSG shudder and the bloody car wouldn't misbehave! Any ideas?

Hi. I am having DSG shuddering problems with my 2008 Passat 6speed, 80,000Kms. It usually happens after about 20 minutes of driving - mine might be a lot worse than yours. When I went to the dealer, to demonstrate the problem, the VW mechanic got me to start on a hill. I reckon they know how to make it happen, so ask them.

That isn't present in my Polo Manual, seems like after the issues with the taxis etc in europe, they have finally cottoned on to the fact that the dry clutch DSG cannot handle being driven in stop start traffic, I.E peak hour.

That is taken from a jetta owner's manual 12.2011 edition. When did you get your polo by the way?

Seriously - this reminds me of my first car (1986 Cordia Turbo). The page in the manual saying "Do not drive with positive boost for more than 45 seconds straight" - or words to that effect.

The box needs to be designed to work in all conditions.

When I initially got the car and read this I didn't particularly think of it as an issue that might appear in daily driving but more in track days with the car.

I've taken a new interest after media releases by VW execs talking about certain traffic conditions and climate affecting the dsg...sales execs mention none of this before purchase.

Porsche developed and started using the duel clutch system (PDK) in 1983. Ran it in motorsport environment. Did not make it available to Joe Public road cars until 2008. Wonder when VW started the DSG development and how much testing and real life usage it faced before being released to Joe Public.

Now that VW own Porsche there is two things I would 'love' VW to bring to their product.

PDK - (or look at how to make their DSG PDK like in reliability and performance)
Brake modulation or feel if you prefer that term. (Oh how Porsche have that oh so right!)

Vw has a reliable dsg already. The 6 speed wet clutch one doesn't have half the complaints of the dq200.

I think going dry clutch is inherently harder to pull off as reliably as a wet clutch due to heat.

Any other manufacturers use dry clutch dsg? Ford maybe?
