If you are getting False nuetrals on a regular basis then ask for the mechatronics unit to be changed.. this is dangerous and should be covered by warranty

Yet more 7-speed DSG questions and observations, 2012 118tsi

I've had my MY 2012 118tsi for 4 months, just on 10,000km and today it's at the dealer getting a fan belt and idler wheel replaced after leaving me stranded.

I took the opportunity to ask them to look at the DSG with which I have several problems. I've just spent 4 hours reading this thread and shudder/clutch issues thread, so if something's already been covered can you kindly point me to where, rather than giving me a hard time

My DSG has been pretty good since new with very little shudder, but it's beginning to drive me crazy with certain 'characteristics'...

    - moderate acceleration from stop is uncomfortable through the first two changes - it just doesn't get the changes right, and changes too early ... your body lurches forwards backwards forwards backwards as engine power doesn't properly match clutch take-up. Very light acceleration is fine, and flat out is not bad either, but the in-betweens are just uncomfortable and passengers say 'woo ... I thought this was a good car?'.

    - going round corners in D is woeful, it wants to remain in too low gear even at 1100 - 1200 revs, just chugs without giving the required acceleration and without changing down. Unless you floor it, in which case after a delay it changes down a *few* gears and suddenly at full power does things you didn't want to do half way through a corner. If you manually change gears and use the same amount of accelerator it's fine, and in S it's fine, but in auto D it seems to have no idea when to change. It's got to the point I change from D to S before every corner, just so I can go round the corner in comfort and a reasonable gear, which is not exactly the point of an automatic.

    - starting from rest up a steep hill *slowly* seems to be impossible. I got into a tricky and potentially damaging situation where i was at the bottom of a friend's steep driveway a few metres in front of their garage door. I needed to reverse away uphill, slowly enough that I could turn into a sharp, narrow, steeply downhill, badly cambered joining driveway that was edged with large rocks that you couldn't see. But as far as I could discover it was impossible - if I applied a moderate amount of throttle the clutch would start to take-up but then cut the engine and disengage clutch - so I'd roll another metre towards that garage door. If I applied enough throttle to get it to complete the take up and move uphill, it rocketed up, so fast that there was no chance of manouvering safely into the turning driveway. Very nearly a disaster, only saved by a dangerous but luckily successful complete guess at a high speed trajectory.

So I asked the dealer about these points. The head mechanic is a smug guy and just says it's normal, there's no adjustment, it learns your driving style (meaning: you're a crap driver so it's your fault), you're taking up my valuable time, please go away. The lesser mortals said there was a 'recent' applicable software upgrade that should fix these issues. I couldn't find out if 'recent' was actually recent, or if it's the 37G7 upgrade which is probably already applied to my vehicle, and if not which won't address these issues anyway.

    So my questions please...

    1. What exactly is this 'learning' capability? The dealer can't explain it and I've yet to find anything written that seems reasonable to me. Some say there's no such thing, that the 'learning' just refers to the fact that the clutch take-up points etc are dynamically variable, so the machine learns where the take-up is and the characteristics of the clutches (as it must do in one way or another).

But if there is a real 'learning' that affects when or how it changes gears, does it mean that if you drive softly for 10 minutes, it thinks you want to do that forever, so next time you come to a corner it won't change down? Or is it something that operates over weeks? What characteristics is it 'learning'?

    2. How can a consumer with no VAG reset this learning process to the default starting point? I've read arguments that you can and you can't. If you can reset it, how would you best 'teach' the thing to change down and not stagger along at 1200 revs under moderate acceleration?

    3. Does anyone know if there's actually a new software update for the 7-speed that hasn't been mentioned here yet? If so what does it address?

    4. Is there a technique that will enable you to start up a steep hill slowly. By this I mean the equivalent of slipping the clutch with higher engine revs (in a manual), or using the torque converter to creep uphill (in a normal auto)? What should you do in the situation I describe above?

    5. Can someone (Ryan_R?) tell me HOW they manage to install aftermarket DSG tunes without voiding the warranty? I asked my dealer at the time of purchase and again the other day and got an absolute "you won't be covered", but the description of the Harding Performance tune sounds exactly what I want. I can't afford to risk the warranty (and my ability to get an extended warranty later) so how do others get around this?

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any help I can get to make my vehicle fun again.

Shocking to hear the 2012 model still has the same issues I've had the last two years.

First thing I did was get APR Stage1 to remove a bit of pedal lag and give more power in the low revs. Extra power and better fuel consumption was great but didn't really help those problems too much.

Then got a SprintBooster which was a cheap way to fix lag and quite fun on combo with Stage 1 but still a few niggles thanks to the DSG. It adapts every 60km, so of you're stick in peak hour it's rubbish. Conversely if you go for a sprint in Sport mode in the mountains on Sunday you'll find the Monday commute is better. Supposedly you can reset the adaption by turning on ignition, pressing the accelerator pedal all the way down until you feel a button being pushed in, then turn the car off and back on. Disconnecting the car battery for awhile can also help for the next trip but similar to resetting via VCDS it'll last a week at best.

So I ended up driving everywhere in manual mode, eventually buying a GTI wheel with DSG paddles.

The dealer nearest me (Berwick) were also terrible to deal with, so I drive a bit further to Burwin who were dealer of the year a few times recently and were much better. Had the car serviced there as well so they won't working for nothing. The APR tune is easy to turn off so did that and never mentioned it.

One stuff was replaced things improved but the same underlying problems remained, so since warranty had run out took things into my (Guy_H's) own hands and was one of the first to get the DSG tune. Must've worked because I'm rarely in manual mode any more.

No new dealer software that I'm aware of. Borrow VCDS and turn down hill start assist one notch, you'll spend less time stationary fighting the brakes and more time moving slowly before rocketing uphill.

Try the new software from Guy, there's no trial but I was promised a refund if not happy. APR customers get 10% off as well. Find a nice dealer, turn off what you cab turn off, and don't volunteer any info that's not needed. Not impossible for them to find out but they have to waste time looking for it.

Thanks Ryan. All good info. Unfortunately being in Canberra I don't get to choose a good dealer! We have: a) the ok one that is reasonably organised but too pleased with themselves and just trot out the standard lines "can't adjust that", "never heard that before" ... and b) the other very poor one who nobody uses. So no chance of a good dealer who'll bypass their declared absolute ban on remaps/tunes. They just state they won't accept it, and say they can tell. I can't risk it. It's a real bummer, though I'm not so keen either on paying $1000 just to get the gear changes to work as they should in the first place, but I'd at least try it if not for the warranty.

I asked them again about the software update that they said "will fix my dsg problems", and it turns out it is actually the 37G7 recall, so it's not going to improve anything. Girl didn't know anything about it and the tech just said the usual platitudes and nothing useful.

I asked them to make sure they check the dsg operation after doing the software update before returning the car - I'll see how it comes back. But not hopeful.

PS Are you saying the DSG adapts every 60km? Can you point me to any description of this adaptive behaviour pls? Still a mystery what it adapts, and based on what. I will try the reset you describe, but I've also read people saying this is rubbish so how are we supposed to know? Anyway will give it a go when next it goes bad.

    AHHHRG!

I got a new gearbox fitted and now after just 3k the shudder is back. Just light but I know it will just get worse over time. The car is in the shop at the moment for a new camshaft adjuster or driving chain tentioner (they need to pull the engine apart to find out exactly). This is being done after I complained about a grinding noise and rough idle.

I might need to trade the current ride in for a new 77TSI manual. If I have to pay 3-4k on top I'll save on the extended warranty and the DSG remap. Off to the dealer....

    cheers

So it would seem that a light 'shudder' is considered normal? I guess there's no option but to get that DSG remapped. Does anyone know how you can tell that your DSG has gotten to the point where it would be advisable to get VW to replace it before being remapped?

Can i please take some time to clear up a few misconceptions being thrown about here?

Ryan is mostly correct, however regardless of what APR said, with the latest update to dealer VAS systems, ALL aftermarket software is visible, even APR, even at Burwin, from the horse's mouth.

yes, the dsg will start to "learn" (adapt is a better word) driving characteristics by the type of use it is getting, mainly to aid in fuel consumption but that's it.. If you want it to "re-learn" drive hard for a bit and it will figure it out, but then go back to it's old ways. Alternatively, drive in M. If you wish to reset this, disconnect th ebattery and then reconnect it. It's much cheaper than a VCDS cable and software but you have to re teach your auto windows and reset your clock each time.

In relation to the smug head mechanic, go elsewhere. It really is that simple. I send all the vic based polo crew that have issues with their dealers (which seems to be everywhere in metro melbourne other than burwin) to Burwin because they are the only ones who haven't given me bulltish excuses about problems.

The 37g7 campaign you talk about affects only specific part number DQ200 dsg boxes, there are at last count 5 different part numbers for the DQ200, probably most likely to do with where it was built as luck would have it, i have been able to find out that there are 5 plants around the world that build the DQ200. The campaign tells the faulty mechatronics unit installed in the DSG to fully seat the valves that control the mechatronic's hydraulic fluid because when sat unused for an extended period of time, the valves can fail like exactly what has happend to mine.

No, under no circumstances is shuddering normal. Nor is rattling over rough roads or uphill 9particularly in 2nd gear as 3rd gear rattles around when pre-slected), hesitating on upshifts or downshifts, hard violent up and down shifts, flashing gear displays, reluctance to select gears, dropping out of gear etc. NONE OF THESE ARE NORMAL.

For further info, please read the link in my signature, I have plenty of other media articles relating to this issue.

I've moved the tuning detection talk into its own thread, as it's off-topic for this thread:

Please continue that discussion there. Thanks!

So my Golf R is starting to feel more rough with the DSG, can't find any other Golf R owners with similar issues, anyone? It's not consistent so might be difficult to show a dealer the problem.

What do you mean by "rough"? Typical woes are shudders and false neutrals.
