Current Golf R. Replaced mechatronics unit after a few months when I got a false neutral. DSG was faultless and would have happily kept it as is but warranty, why not. Dealer suggested it.

    I'd buy another DSG VW.

Love the tech, love the options it gives.
So 2 DSG's owned and 2 replacement mechatronic units replaced. And if they had been the 7 speed dry clutch version being discussed here you could add a couple of clutch packs to that. You are a forgiving man. Imagine the cost and inconvenience if your cars were to be taken to 200,000km? Most conventional autos and manuals would need no more than a couple of cheap gear oil changes to that distance. And as boring and ancient as the Golf manuals are they do seem to be fairly reliable (and nice manuals to use as a bonus).

It does appear though that the 6 speed DSG is more reliable than the 7 speed but with a much higher 60,000km service cost.

    Mountainman, you need to read

I know you really dislike VW and the DSG. Not the first time you've shown that but I don't need to forgive anything about the DSG

As I said, first DSG never failed and neither did the second one

Second DSG had a false neutral which was actually my fault because of a very specific set of circumstances caused by my driving technique. Never failed

As I said, two of my Subie autos actually failed within warranty (one self destructed, the other wouldn't engage reverse) and the wife's Honda auto also completely failed (replaced under warranty). All three conventional slush boxes (and horrible to actually use daily, particularly the Subies)

That brings this back on topic. The whole DSG failure topic has been done to death and I'm sure you can find them if you want

Wrong. You are defensive aren't you. I really like VW as a brand and my Golf in particular and when they are working as designed I like the DSG (except those few rough stumbles they can sometimes have at slow speed). And what's the rant about your Subaru and Honda experiences for? Is it just comfirming that every car you own has had a gearbox problem?

    Huh ?

    Defensive ?

I was restating my comment as you appeared to misread it (or interpret as you wanted)

Re cars Ive owned, those three (two Subies and one Honda) are three of more than 40 cars I've owned

In terms of failures of auto boxes, it has been the commodores and falcons I've had as company cars that have been "faultless", perhaps surpisingly

Not that any of the slush boxes were close to the DSG in terms of fun and enjoyment or performance

I read in the manual you should never engage N whilst the vehicle is moving, it doesn't lubricate the gearbox or some **** like that, can't remember exactly.
