Anyone had issues with the DSG "falling" out of gear under full throttle? The other day I had to merge from a dead stop, onto a 100kmh country highway with some traffic, naturally that's a good excuse to give it full noise. Put it in manual mode, 1st gear full throttle, hit the paddle to change into 2nd (short of redline), and it bumped out into neutral as soon as 2nd was hit. I hit the paddle again and it went into 1st (vehicle speed was in excess of what it should be for first gear to engage so it revved it's tits off), then 2nd, 3rd etc went fine.

I'm just wondering if maybe it was because I changed into 2nd too early when the engine was in peak torque but vehicle speed was too slow to be hitting 2nd in full torque, ie the jolt from hitting 2nd gear with low vehicle speed and full torque was enough to knock it out of gear? Perhaps to care for the DSG it's better to redline it before changing gears so that vehicle speed, engine speed and torque match up better for a smoother transmission of torque through the clutches? If I had traction control "OFF" then hitting second gear in full torque at 4000-5000rpm would have just smoked the wheels rather than jolting the transmission so much. Maybe the DSG and the ECU is tuned to work perfectly under the standard power and torque levels however with the 200kW/400Nm +/- that the vehicle has now, occasionally under certain circumstances the DSG, ECU and TC smarts get their knickers in a knot. Then again it could just be a rare mechanical occurence that happens from time to time.

Interested to hear your thoughts, especially if you've had the same thing happen.

If I accelerate heavily and manually change up a tad before red line I'll hear/feel the gearbox jolt as well - hasn't come out of gear though. If I shift earlier (say below 4,000rpm) or don't shift at all and let the car do it for me at redline, it's smooth.

Not sure why this thread is where it is because DSG likes.....etc is not limited to MKVI. I had my mechatronics replaced under warranty and have done nearly 20k since.

It is probably the best "non full manual" I have ever used. For me, it has been faultless since then and has been an absolute joy to use no matter what mode. But for everyday driving, I leave it in "D" and use the paddles if needed but in "D" mode, it is a bit smarter at selecting the right gear than I am.

I don't see this issue as being a "fault" with the gearbox, it is more than likely a fail-safe to prevent destroying the gearbox, I guess as far as the gearbox is concerned, it would rather knock itself into neutral than knock itself to smitherines.... In straight line acceleration, it is probably best to just stick it in "D" or "S" and let the brilliant piece of engineering work it's magic...

In manual mode, is the upshift delay time using the paddle throttle positon dependent? Downshifts are instantaneous but upshifts are delayed on mid throttle.

Downshifts (3rd to 2nd etc) are throttle dependent too. According to the VAG documentation, you can experience up to 800ms of no power transfer during a downshift depending on the throttle load (or lack thereof). From memory of the last time I read this documentation, much of the reason for the delay is a lack of load to match the revs quick enough, so it's a manual throttle blip with both clutches disengaged.

The "upshift delay" (2nd into 3rd etc) is different as it's more of an electronic delay (you press the button, but nothing happens for "a fraction of a second"). But when it does shift, there is no loss of power transfer, it just doesn't happen straight away. The VW documentation doesn't discuss this delay (that I can find), so I'm not sure if it's just purely electronic lag, or if it's for torque and gearbox protection etc.

Thanks for the info I've only just got back home and had a chance to take it for a bit of a run. I will explore the throttle position thing on upshift more. The owners manual doesn't say anything about it really
