hmmmm? I've just typed a number of those things into the search page and each time all I got was 15 plus pages of theads, none of which even mention the term DSG. I'm not saying that its not there, but it just seems very hard to find anything. I generally love reading the post on this forum, but more recently I have been frustrated by the fact that I always find myself going through the same stuf in an effort to find new information that I actually want. The search/advanced search facility just doesn't narrow things down enough.
This was meant to be a response to something on page 2, so not sure how it got here

Posts are in chronologic order - a new post always ends up at the bottom of the last page. Perhaps edit your post and include a quote of the post you were replying to?

To Corey - you are never in manual mode using paddles if the stick is in auto. All you are doing is briefly over riding the auto.

My sincere apologies for not using the Corey definition. If any person were to do so, no one would be able to estimate usage.

    +1.
i find it annoying as it reverts back to 'full auto' (d) if i don't change gears within 20-30 secs or something.
when i use the paddle shifters, i make sure the gear selector is flicked over into manual (m). no interruptions there

i find in 'auto' mode, the dsg computer does a better job downshifting than me in 'manual' mode. its smoother & the engine braking is more effective. hence i find myself in 'auto' 80% of the time.

sports (s) mode is no good in suburban traffic driving conditions.

    I already know this Candyman.

According to the owners manual, and according to everyone who had posted up to the point that you did, "manual mode" is when you push the gear shifter to the left from the D position. This is not my definition, and you constantly arguing against anything I say is just getting old.

Well, at least it is a lot better than my GTI was

That used to drop back to auto mode far too quick.

The R holds it for much longer

    Hi

when I drove out of the dealer on Monday in my new car I thought "S**t, that was a shocking change from D1 to D2" - it almost bunny-hopped. Odd sensation.

After 3 days of driving it only in D mode (not tried S mode, apart from in the initial test drive - when I thought it was too harsh - no that's too hard on it, I thought it sounded and felt like it was straining, and I know it maintains revs longer etc so it DOES sound different) I have it sussed I think.

You almost have to 'feather' the accelerator, keeping the DSG "almost" engaged...if you give it a tickle, THEN a smooth poke, it is a seemless change and engagement, truly beautiful. It's a fine line, get it wrong and it feels like you're lurching or you're stalling it, but get it right and it is so s-m-o-o-t-h, and THAT'S as designed I think. It's a learning curve. Happy to say I have the feel for it much more than not.

Therefore, put me down, at this very early stage, as a lover of it.

Yeah Roddy, it's why I make a point of "correcting people" when they say that the DSG is an automatic. Mechanically it is a manual gearbox (2 actually) with a mechatronics unit which operates the clutches and changes the cogs for you. Treat it with that in mind, and it reacts well. If you treat it as a "torque converter automatic" and just stomp on the pedal and do other stuff you can do in a real automatic, the DSG doesn't always react well.

Sometimes people have legitimate mechanical (or software) issues with the DSG, and there sure are a lot of those posts in this thread. Other times it's just becoming familiar with the operation of the DSG and adjusting your style a bit. There's also a lot of those posts in this thread too.
