Darth, please drop the subject. Especially stop taking the argument to PM's. You're a relative newbie, and harrasing people via PM is not a good start. Having an opinion is fine, but other people are also allowed their opinion.
As you wish. Again, I was merely not wanting to point out in public that your post was beside the point.
The question I was responding to was: Which transmission should I buy?
I pointed out a couple of downsides of DSG. Your response that Golfs are generally unreliable does not address the fact that the transmission is a significant part of the car and if it goes wrong it may cause the car to be unusable, be inconvenient at best and if it fails out of warranty, very expensive.
So no, I would not ignore the many reliability issues and concerns raised in this forum about DSG just because, as you claim, "Golfs will have problems" and to that extent I think your post represents questionable advice to the person asking the question to which I was originally responding.
and you could have just asked me not to PM via PM rather than involving the forum in your concern.

We understand your viewpoint.
My posts described my view of DSG as an option plus there are many other threads on the subject.
Again, the DSG for myself offers an all round transmission providing a mix of the best manual and auto has to offer
This is in fact what the Golf is overall
The DSG is reliable. Issues do occur with it. In very very few cases does it totally fail.
The OP must decide if the considerable benefits outweigh the known issues
For me and many others it does.
I have owned both a manual and a DSG Golf. Have you ?
It is not until you have driven a DSG vehicle for some time do you realize the great transmission it is and what it offers.
However, if you are tight on cash, either go manual or get extended warranty because **** does happen![]()

QFT Candyman.. I might add that with practice the paddle control of the car delivers that same involved experience. and when you tire of the gear thrashing ( which the DSG handles very well) you can drop it back into slush mode and cruise
All power to the manual version, I can understand the popularity and the questionable buyers regret, though I would temper that with the doughyness of the D mode which some feel would be addressed via the manual. However the smoothness of the gear changes is for me second to none![]()

No worries, mate; I'm sure the silent majority understands my opinion and why I was defending it (and sorry if a single PM made anyone feel "harassed" - maybe a pre-PM first to ask if I can send a PM).
I wish a Super_Moderator as vigilant as you, someone who embraces free and open discussion and a courteous discourse in accordance with the Rules, was on duty last night when SilverFoxX was dissing my opinion as "a croc" and "rot" without any substantiation.
There were a few more than 1 PM
I should point out that you were making statements not expressing an opinion to answer a question.. hence my annoyance that there was nothing to back them up and casting some aspersion on those who have made a conscious decision.
I didn't respond to your PM as it is just going to perpetuate the argument.. most here have been down the path of DSG v Manual , 3 door v 5 door, GTI v R and it goes no where.. feel free to respond however I have no more to comment on the topic.

I'm sorry, SilverFoxx, but, as you know, I have been asked not to make any further comment and so I cannot respond except that on a point of fact I only sent a single PM to each of my detractors. I'll let our respective posts speak for themselves and will leave it to others to judge and comment on whether my initial post on the subject about there being more Autos than manuals in Australia and my comments about what "seemed to be the case" was an expression of my opinion or something different as you now suggest and so deserved your discourteous rebuke (if ever a post could). PS As for any "argument", I am not aware of any - I merely expressed an opinion and it seemed to set the cat amongst the pigeons.

I came from a 235KW ATW Piggy STi and was pretty good at heal and toe and will happily admit that for A to B on a windy bit of bitumen I would take it without a second though over the golf. Unfortunately I couldn't legally tow a trailer with a track bike or two on it so made the switch to a DSG GTI and don't regret it for a second.
Realistically the amount of driving I was doing ( The Fun twisty stuff ) where a manual could be properly enjoyed was less than 5% but a torque converter auto was out of the question because frankly they are S&^t. This is where a DSG shines you still have all the benefits and feel of a proper manual gearbox. Can use it like a manual gearbox and when you really can't be stuffed just leave it to do its own thing and it still feels good. An auto just can't provide the feel.
Yes if you can justify a toy only car then manual is hands down the winner but for something you have to live with whatever you may throw at it personally I think the DSG is a no brainer.
Perhaps I'm getting old but a great car that is flexible enough to deal with daily life and whatever mood your in is a clear winner over a hard core rocket that you don't have a choice in how you use it.
Think I must be missing something, or my car is faulty..... I have a my11 golf gti and the "manual" mode is anything but manual. If you stick it in 3rd or 4th between 2 to 3K rpm and floor it, what happens? Mine thinks to itself, this guy is nuts, I know better, lets select second, and of it goes. In my case it seems more like a "I would prefer" mode than anything like a manual. This is a shame cause my wife wanted an automatic and I wanted a manual. She seems to have done ok, but I am definetly not happy. Having said that it is a very good automatic, but the way I read other member's comments I expected a proper manual transmission with an automatic clutch.
To stop idiots damaging the drivetrain perhaps
If you think you know better, drop it up a gear with the paddles
