I am sure I read somewhere, perhaps in the manufacturers manuals that it is good to shift the stick to neutral in the DSG when sitting for longer periods, at some lights etc as it helps to preserve the clutch(es).

    Makes sense I guess!

    Hi guys,

My partner and I are going to place an order for a Golf R next weekend by the looks of things. Still alittle unsure of what way to go with the transmissions, i'm leaning towards the manual.

I wanted to ask on the DSG in S mode, does that change throttle or engine mapping or just hold the gears longer?

More correctly, if you have your foot on the brake, then both clutches are disengaged. If you just have the handbrake on, then the transmission will try and drive off in 1st, and eventually trip out.

It only holds the gear longer. If you have ACC then the ACC in sports mode will change the throttle mapping and steering wheel assistance I believe.

Yes it does. S mode holds the gears MUCH longer. It's probably not something you'd do to avoid using D, because it'll still be in 3rd at 100km/h and never shut the exhaust up!

The D mode also adapts... if you drive aggressively, it'll hold gears for longer too. I mean, if you have your foot flat to the floor, it won't change into 3rd until you're at 100km/h either, but the difference is, once you've stopped accelerating, it'll then change in to the appropriate gear... unfortunately it feels an appropriate gear on flat ground at 55km/h whilst not accelerating is 6th!

M mode allows you to change gears yourself. I probably use M 50/50 with D, and never use S. To make it easier and more pleasureable to use M, I've purchased S2TPP DSG Paddles which are longer than the stock ones and much easier to use constantly, and at 180 degrees lock (leaving the hands at the 9 and 3 positions all the time).

Alternative if you still really want to use D and not M, you can purchase a HPA Stage 3 DSG flash which in addition to giving you faster shifts, firmer clutch pressure, and higher Launch Control revs, also adjusts the D mode shift points so that it won't be in 6th when cruising at only 55km/h.

@MkVIGTI - ACC has no effect on the throttle.

If you don't like the stock DSG in S then you won't like the HPA stage 3 flash in D. Its like the little man inside the gearbox has gone mental.

There's talk on VWVortex about an ECM software update that fixes the low speed lurching on the 6-speed DSG (TSB NUMBER: 2011690/3 35-11-01). Is this available in OZ?

Sorry....my mistake. I thought this was about the 7 speed. Mine is a 7 speed DSG, and it is fixed.
The DSG upgrade/fix is for all VW models 2004-2011, DSG, all VIN's.
If your VW dealer does not know anything about it, quote 'TSB NUMBER: 2011690/3 35-11-01'
