I think the "we updated software" comment is a fob off half the time. I mentioned my DSG quirk which has happened 5-6 times since December and asked about an update. They said there is no "update" for the DSG in the R anyway.

Golf R DSG Is this normal?

I figure it probably is but there's a 'grabbing sensation' and hesitation when I take off, especially on a hill start.
Just asking if anyone experiences it without sounding like a dill.

That would be the "normal" clutch engaging sensation that the DSG's have. Although i have a manual, i have driven plenty of DSG's over the past few years - and the smoothest way i have found to take off is to quickly/lightly tap the acellerator to engage the clutch and then back off, then apply your normal amount of throttle you would use to take off from the standstill.

So you mean it feels like it hesitates on hill starts? It's hard to say without test driving a car to see whether something is wrong or is working normally. Many people who buy there first VW freak out and think something is wrong with there gearbox(DSG) when it's just the way they perform. Just when you release your foot off the brake the car should hold for 3sec until it engages gear, that is if you haven't already put your foot on the accelerator.

The DSG is not an automatic gearbox. People referring to it that way causes much of these "worries" in customers. It's an "automated manual gearbox" - and therefore has a clutch and stuff and can explain what you're feeling.

However, since you say you notice this especially on hills, what you're probably noticing more than anything is the "Hill Start Assist". When you take your foot off the brake whilst on a hill, the car leaves the brake applied for ~3 seconds to give you time to accelerate without rolling backwards. It'll release the brake once it knows there's enough acceleration to not roll back, but it can certainly leave a "grabby sensation" on some hills.

Thanks Corey_R.I think you nailed it for me.It's just what I would have imagined an HSA to be like.
I'm not worried at all but curious about my 'clutchless manual'.
Thanks again for going easy on me!

I got that just now driving now. I'm also noticing that the DSG is staying in 4th a lot longer than it should. I find myself hitting the up paddle to kick it into 5th.

I just drive mine manually most of the time now.A mate has an R35 GTR and he does the same too. It's really quite unimpressive in Drive around town.
