There is a street in Chatswood that is very steep. No problem driving up it, but when I get to the top and stop, on getting moving again, the DSG does not want to change up for quite a few seconds. It is not slipping or anything like that, just that it takes around 5 or more seconds of driving before the transmission will change up, no matter the speed. It does not redline but the rev limiter does kick in and stop you over revving the engine.

There are no alarms or other indications.

This has now happened twice when I have had to get to a meeting in Chatswood.

For those interested, this is driving south on Edgar Street and then climbing up to Centennial Avenue when I have to stop because of a spoon drain. Then it is a left turn into Centennial Avenue and now the transmission will not change up for a few seconds.

It is the combination of circumstances, because I drive up similar slopes elsewhere without any issues. It is almost as though the slope is causing issues after coming to a complete stop and then starting off again. I don't lose drive, just that it won't change up for a few seconds.

As I said, there are no alarms or other indications so it is doubtful that any faults would be logged.
Mine does this. I reckon the car thinks there's a steep hill and it better not shift up. It gets annoying - it's the reason I'm considering getting a Golf R / Scirocco wheel with the paddles so I can flick it up a gear quickly!

Mine is now slipping in 5th gear, booked in to have a quick checkup next Friday, will let you guys know how I go...

A follow up on the failure to change up automatically after going up a reasonably long, very steep road and then immediately turning left on a level intersection.

I had to attend another meeting at Chatswood the other day, and this time I was prepared. As I got to the bottom of the hill I pushed the selector away from me to engage "manual" mode. When I got to the top and came to a stop, the transmission automatically changed down to 1st. I turned left and changed up manually, and then brought the transmission back into Auto, and all was well.

All I can put it down to is the damping of the tilt sensor that had not quite allowed the sensor to realise that the slope was no longer there.

Oh hey, I've got that EXACT problem, doesn't really bother me, but missus said drives her nuts.

Sometime there's the clunk and then the brake "grinds". Only happens when brake and reversing.

Makes me think that the brake pad/caliper is shifting when the rotor changes direction (reverse) and brakes applied.

My brake pads are low, so I'll see if it's better after changing the pads.

As usual, VW said it didn't notice anything when I mentioned it last service.

Should have nothing to do with DSG as it can happen 10 seconds after shifting into reverse, whereas if DSG related, it'll happen when shifting.

yeah I need a new Mechatronic too. Got clutch packs replaced to eliminate the 2nd gear shudder and got some weird shifting and black smoke out the exhaust.
Went back to the dealer and diagnosis shows I need a new mechatrinic.... Yes, still under warranty

Interesting thread. I have enjoyed reading it. I got my GTD with DSG because I'm lazy, particularly in traffic. What I got was an amazing match up for the diesel that is so responsive. Generally oil burners are a bit slow off the mark but the run up the gears in a GTD DSG is superlative.
They say that the GTD exhaust is accoustically tuned to make it sound the least like a diesel as possible and from inside it does sound like a petrol engine but I dont know if thats true. Anyone know?
    cheers

Our DSG TDI Tiguan sounds like a petrol from the inside. That was one of the things that got my wife hooked on it. Even though it's a diesel, it didn't sound like one.

It's a different story on the outside though - still sounds like a tractor.

I borrowed a 103TDI once and it had a little burble but I could still pretty easily tell it was a diesel, not sure how different the GTD would be. The take-off response was pretty good too (i.e. no pedal lag compared to the 118TSI) - not sure if that's due to the different engine, different gearbox (6spd wet clutch v 7spd dry) or something else. Not quite as fast as the Stage 1 118TSI though, but quite respectable. The short rev-range was the biggest killer.

I've read several reviews of the Octavia RS that suggest the diesel (125TDI; GTD) sounds better than the petrol (147TSI; GTI). I've thrashed one good and hard in a Passat CC and I have to say, even ignoring the exhaust note (differs between models of course), it's a refined, smooth and great-performing motor. My only gripe is that it runs out of puff in the last 1k or so of revs - and because there's not so many revs to play with to start with, it's not all that much fun when you're really up it for the rent.

The diesel clatter at idle is undeniable from the outside, but that wouldn't bother me if I was buying one.
