    Mate,

You can floor it in 3rd or 4th at 2/3K rpm in a manual and nothing bad happens. It may not accelerate as quickly as it would if you had changed down, but that is/should be my choice.

There are some awesome threads in the Mk6 section like 'time to first damage', but this one is like watching question time on ABC!!

In my case it seems more like a "I would prefer" mode than anything like a manual. This is a shame cause my wife wanted an automatic and I wanted a manual. She seems to have done ok, but I am definetly not happy. Having said that it is a very good automatic, but the way I read other member's comments I expected a proper manual transmission with an automatic clutch.
You could start by reading your (owners) manual.
If you "floor" it, you're pressing a button under the accelerator called the kick-down button. It's there for the sole purpose of telling the car to change down a gear (or two). If you don't floor it, and instead must push the pedal to the 100% position (there will be resistance there. practise when the car is off if you don't know what I'm talking about), then the car will start in the gear you selected.

Corey, I think the "kick down button" suggests auto mode. Well it doesn't suggest it IS auto mode.
We are talking about the manual (read, I'll think about it and if you are in a gear I like I won't change it) mode..... PANTS.

Kick down button overrrides manual mode. You get 100% throttle before activating the kickdown button so all you have to do is not stand on the pedal.

The last couple of pages of this thread have been an interesting read..at the end of the day does it really matter what transmission you drive? i mean honestly.. its still the same bloody car! I ended up getting manual.. why? well i "personally" felt that whilst paddles is the closest thing to F1 racing i'd ever get, i would hate not having a third paddle and the fact I was already way out of my price range spending 52k on a car I didnt want any more expense...I probably should have got dsg because the girlfriend sucks at driving the R at the moment but hopefully she gets used to it! haha.. I test drove the DSG GTI and honestly I loved it.. the way it popped and farted in gear changes and the way you pick up speed so easy was awesome.. I drove it very enthusiastically and it made me wonder how long the gearbox would last if I drove it like that every day and would VW come up with an excuse to not warrant it because it has been "thrashed"..

anyhow, the way I see it at the end of the day..you dont see Evo X owners or heck even commodore owners bitching over what transmission they chose, so why are VW owners so passionate behind their own personal choices?! at the end of the day we all own awesome GTI's or R's or whatever golf we have so having a pull on the internet over DSG or Manual is pretty pathetic.

I got a Candy white car... is it **** because I didnt get rising blue? i mean come on, some of you guys would be mid 30's early 40's, so why dont we all have a big hug and enjoy whatever car we own! your all meant to be car enthusiast..
