Mine doesn't shift into 1st in manual mode until I'm virtually at a standstill. So it's possibly to do with the gearbox's learned parameters for your driving style? If that's a case, a reset of the gearbox memory may resolve the issue.
Mine's the same so it must be a non GTI thing...
So far I'm enjoying the DSG and various modes. I had my first axle tramp yesterday when I forgot I was in manual and gave it a bit from the lights. It didn't sound nice either! I probably use D mostly due to the traffic situation where I live but I really like down changing in manual mode. Sports mode is a little bit annoying as it doesn't get out of third until about 70 kph but it's also good when slowing and it down changes.
Has anyone mentioned that it's possible to flash high beam or operate the wipers when looking to change using paddles...or at least when you're a newbie it is! I did this a couple of times on day one but it hasn't happened since.. The shift paddles probably are a touch small..
