I'm not discounting the issues that some have had with the DSG (all the various versions), I have had the mechatronic replaced on both our GTI and the R so I know the DSG isn't what it should be although in the case of the GTI I had it replaced by VW as I was about to sell it and VW and the dealer were fantastic with that replacement and with the R, had a false neutral or two in the first few thousand km's and the dealer got it replaced without question.
However, after 50,000 km with the R, the DSG has been faultless since.
Perfectly smooth when I drive like a granny (when the mother in law is in the car), including creeping in traffic and fast shifting and smooth when driven more aggressively.
In D mode, shifts are just right and not shifting up early like many seem to get in their cars. After the mech replacement that changed for the better and has been like that ever since.
In S mode (where I spend a bit of time on the freeway), shifts have tamed down a bit and don't hold a gear too long. Pretty much ideal for freeway usage and cruise control.
Paddle and stick shifts work just perfect, alone or in combination.

With the 'wet' DQ250's there was a tendency for the dealers to rip out and replace the mechatronic when really it only required a software update. The thing was they were being paid quite a lot to do it so there was little incentive to not do it. When the new mech goes in it gets the latest software updates but I guess if there were no updates at the time then there wasn't much choice. False neutrals due to software were certainly fixed with the more recent updates -mine was one too.
When we 'remap' a DSG box now I will where possible use the latest file from VW/Audi for that particular DSG hardware and software variant, everyone's happy this way. In the MY11's and earlier R's you can arrange a big shift speed improvement and we implement this on all the earlier versions now depending on the level of DSG tune. Strangely the GTI's seem to be better in this regard from those I've seen anyway. Its pretty cool what you can do actually.
Apart from a bog stock passat none of the cars I've seen have had a failure yet ...touch wood but gees those DQ200's are pretty scary.
With our GTI and R, their process was
1. Reset and try for a week
No improvement
2. Update software
No improvement
3. Replace mechatronic
With the R I had a false neutral after the software update.
None since the mech replacement
So with my 90TSI and the DQ200 my only option is to go back to VW and hope they will chuck in new clutch plates/mechatronics/gearbox every time any of those parts play up? I am booked next week for an assessment to the shudder and clunky shifting and I will keep my fingers crossed.

After having a play the other night on local country road, I thought I'd test the new tyres with the launch control.
Car took off smoking the tyres as predicted, I think launch control in the GTI is a wasted feature for RWD. Anyway, it revs out first and then it's almost like it missed second, similar to missing second on a motorbike, just revved out and then clunked into 2nd. This was in S mode.
If I used the manual shift it didn't do it, but it did it 3 times, I stopped trying after that.
It's just had it's 60,000km DSG service not long ago, is always serviced earlier than specified and I think I have used the burnout button (Launch control) like 5 times prior as it seems useless, I don't need a procedure to smoke the tyres, I can do that without the effort of pushing multiple buttons and stalling it up etc.
I have seen a few posts on the net about it, but never resolved or people didn't get what the poster was saying.
So for those at home, Go through launch control sequence, car doesnt make it into 2nd and revs out, then changes into 2nd.
Before I burn the POS, any ideas?
Today I accidentally shifted to reverse instead of neutral while rolling forward down a hill at 20km/h. I quickly shifted it back though. I have the 7 speed DSG. Is this likely to have done any damage?

I'm keen to get some feedback/guidance over the behaviour of the DSG in my MY12 GTI. I tend to drive only in M, and have a significant JERK upon changing from 1st to 2nd - but only for the first change of that drive - all subsequent changes (including 1 =>2) will be silky smooth. I'm not revving hard for the first change, maybe only 2500-3000rpm, yet the jerk is very noticeable (and alarming/disconcerting) for unprepared passengers (especially if up hill). I have raised (and demonstrated) the issue with dealer, - they reset/reprogrammed the mechatronic (?) - but it didn't really have much of an effect. If I leave it in auto, or change manually at 1500rpm or so for that 1st change, its a pretty smooth one. This behaviour has existed pretty much since I got the car (from new), though I was primarily driving in auto for the 1st 6-8 mths or so - so didn't notice it then. Is this normal behaviour for a DSG GTI, or should I be pursuing the dealer for more work while I'm still in warranty?
