In D, S or manual mode, the clutch should start engaging no more than 1/4 second after releasing the foot brake. In R, the delay is almost 1 second and that is normal.

It is something that should be checked.

Does anyone know why the recall does not affect VW Polo models 2012/13. These models have the 7-speed DSG as well.
Sorry if this questions has been answered here already, there are soo many posts. I haven't read all of them yet.

My question is: How safe do you guys think is a 2012/13 Polo? Are their DSG gearboxes different from the older ones and fault free?

I am guessing the problem only existed with those gearboxes and the 2012/13 have a different 7 speed

The upgraded mechatronic unit was introduced in that model and different clutch plates as far as I understand. They all have DQ200 7 speed boxes The recall is for mechatronic gearbox controllers
If you buy one of these DONT creep it at the lights that heats the clutches up and burns them out Treat it like a manual clutch and you will get better life out of it

I am German so not sure about the expression "don't creep it at the lights". Do you mean that thing some people do when they roll forward very slowly eager waiting for green lights? I usually stay firmly on the brake but in D (some people recommend to go into N though to save fuel).

If its in gear dont hold it on the clutch with just light braking Dont need to go into N wastes time gains nothing.

Brakes on Hold them down lights go green let brake off and away you go.

If someone moved up a few feet dont let car creep up by letting brakes off enough to let car creep forward

Thanks for the reply wai, i'll have to get it looked at, probably not the best time as the dealer will probably just assume I'm jumping on the recall bandwagon but need to get it sorted regardless.

Bying a second hand 2012 Polo is then probably a bad idea because I don't know what the previous owner has done to it and I might end up with worn out clutches soon. Shame...

Not necessarily. You just need to get it checked out like you would ANY manual. After all, you don't know how the previous owner drove. A tip is to get the owner to drive it first when you go for the test drive to see how they deal with it.

Then, again like buying ANY manual, allow an amount for a clutch replacement. As the postings show, the DSG gets a warranty extension, and if it is subject to the recall, you will have had it fixed by VW, so it could well be a good buy.

As some will know, I had the mechatronics replaced under warranty on my R within a few months of picking it up - due to a false neutral.

Have not had any other mechanical issues since but the DSG is still like a child, good most of the time but has moments of misbehaviour (usually fixed by excessive use of the accelerator and S mode)

After a lot of information coming out about the DSG, the Golf in general and the way VW (and their dealers) have been and are mishandling customers concerns and the impact on resale values, I will not be replacing the R with another VW.

This isn't just about the DSG reliability (I actually bought the R knowing the DSG would cause issues, deciding the issues were worth it) but the other poor quality control issues and VWs attitude to customers have outweighed the attractiveness of the brand.

Unsure what my options are but Mercs hatch seems the only option for me.

I will run the 5 year warranty out I purchased on the R and sell, hopefully without too much loss from this recall fiasco.
