My daughter in law's TDI was due for an oil change. I watched many YouTubes on the subject & read Elsawin. As Umai Naa
once said on this forum there around 10 different Youtubes on this topic & most leave some step off or are incorrect.
My son & I discussed how we would do it & decided to do what we thought would be the easiest without any special tools.
We left the battery & tray in place & just removed the air cleaner & tube back to where we could get to the oil filter.
To undo the cap over the filter required a 24mm ,3/8 drive long extension with a wobble fitting.
Under the car that was raised on 4 jack stands, the drain plug was removed [14mm hex. male socket]. Another plug
[plastic with o/flow tube] 8mm hex male socket should be finger tight, is also removed and the oil draining into a clean container. We checked the oil for any metal bits with a torch [it was very clean] and measured the quantity using a
measuring jug. It was just over 4.5 liters. The plugs were reinstalled [level tube 3Nm or finger tight, larger plug lightly tightened] and the new oil pumped into the hole under the oil filter.
The pump we used was purchased for my son's camper to move diesel from a tank to his tow vehicle when needed. It is 12V with the cables & clamps that easily reached the battery that remained in place. We started by sucking the sediment in the chamber under the filter. It worked perfectly but it needed to be switched on & off when filling the gearbox
because the oil would not clear fast enough from the walled chamber.
We pumped in more than we drained out, installed the new filter & cap, torqued to 20Nm. Reconnected the elect plug & reinstalled air filter.
The motor was started with VCDS connected and the usual move of the gearshift lever up & down with the 3 sec pause
in each gear. When the temp was right on the computer, the large drain plug was undone with the motor still running &
the excess oil caught. Plug was reinstalled & torqued to 45Nm.
This is a brief story of what we did & it went as planned. Sorry if I have missed any important steps.

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
