I eventually bought a 2011 Golf GTI dsg and can say that I love the dsg, but only in automatic. None of you mentioned that when in manual mode, if you put your foot to the floor that the kickdown is still active. This spoils it for me and my car spends 99.999% of the time in 'D'. I mentioned this annoyance in another thread and was told basically that I should read the manual as this is VW's designed behaviour, and suck it up. Well sorry, but I think when the car is in manual it should mean manual. It really shouldn't have been that hard for VW to deactivate the kickdown button when the transmission is in manual. As for 'S', haven't really found a use for it.
If you are in manual mode and you floor it and it kicks down I suggest you were in the wrong gear. When we cane our dsg's up and down the twisties myself and others haven't experienced the kickdown probably because we are matching the correct gear for what we want the car to do. In manual mode say in 4th and you tramp the go fast pedal it will kickdown gears to match the response you are after otherwise it labours.
