    Thought I might update this.
I eventually bought a 2011 Golf GTI dsg and can say that I love the dsg, but only in automatic. None of you mentioned that when in manual mode, if you put your foot to the floor that the kickdown is still active. This spoils it for me and my car spends 99.999% of the time in 'D'. I mentioned this annoyance in another thread and was told basically that I should read the manual as this is VW's designed behaviour, and suck it up. Well sorry, but I think when the car is in manual it should mean manual. It really shouldn't have been that hard for VW to deactivate the kickdown button when the transmission is in manual. As for 'S', haven't really found a use for it.

Have only had mine for two weeks but have mixed it up between D & S mainly with very little of the manual as it seems to be alot less aggressive than using the paddles in S. Only issue I have with using the paddles occassionally in S is getting it to stay in the higher gears. I can be doing 100km/hr on the Western Freeway and it keeps wanting to change back to 4th.

D is nice when heading off to work at 5am as I hit the freeway within two minutes of leaving home and it lets everything warm up.

On a side note I'm really pleasantly surprised at the fuel economy even after having used the various modes and having given it some stick on a few occassions.

If you are in manual mode and you floor it and it kicks down I suggest you were in the wrong gear. When we cane our dsg's up and down the twisties myself and others haven't experienced the kickdown probably because we are matching the correct gear for what we want the car to do. In manual mode say in 4th and you tramp the go fast pedal it will kickdown gears to match the response you are after otherwise it labours.

Keep this to yourself as I didn't tell anyone this on the weekend run we had..... but I stuffed up a gear change while caning it. Should have selected 4th but changed down to 2nd due to a brain snap. Lets just say not my usual way of getting it to redline in a hurry. Like I said please keep it to yourself. If I confessed this on vwgolf I'd be ridiculed off the forum, hehehe!

Yes, obviously and intentionally in the wrong gear. I want to feel the torque curve, but VW have decided I can't and all I can get is maximum acceleration, which in this case is not what I want. Remember we are talking about a "manual" mode......

    The R/GTI has a torque curve ?

I have to say, in my GTI and my R I have never had to floor it, ever.
