What's wrong with driving the DSG in manual mode?

Personally, because I love the flexibility it offers, the enjoyment it returns and the tech

It isn't perfect, far from it, but I've stuck with it for reasons mentioned

I've driven manual of all kinds for more than 40 years. I am more than happy to live with the failings of the DSG to be released from the familiarity I have with a clutch pedal

Oh and I have a manual that just happens to also be an auto :p

Haven't we all seen this discussion many times before

I think one thing many people also don't realize that the DSG "learns" your driving style/behavior, so if someone else drives the car it takes a good 15 minutes for the system to learn your drive style. So if your grandma has been driving the car, it will feel weird for some time 'til the system adjusts.
This is a huge "downfall" for DEMO cars, as they generally been driven timidly around the block...

In my opinion you cant compare dsg to traditional manual box, any fool can drive dsg but not everyone can drive a manual

when i drive my parents car (a5 3.0tdi stage 1) I keep it in S, find manual annoying and D not to exciting and S mode being the most fun

Please don't turn this into that old discussion of which is better. It's off topic, invalid and subjective

You will notice my use of and

Apart from that, the DSG is all things to all men.

Ah, but making it "unlearn it" is so much fun.

I assume you are being sarcastic about DEMO cars as the opposite applies in my experience (dealers usually encourage heavy use of the right foot IMO)

Yes Tsuchiya is a fool because he couldn't keep up with a DSG when the MkV GTI was first released.

Damn straight, no complaints from me, love how smooth it is

I am with CM on this one, what R has been driven around the block timidly? the real issue is the car has been driven for short trips at various operating temps constantly.. not good for any car

My DSG is normally in manual mode, because I don't like the auto's choice of gears - to me, it changes up too early, and routinely selects too high a gear. The few times I've used S mode, it hangs on to each gear too long, well past peak power.

I use auto occasionally, like car parks, and notice a difference in change quality.

Around town, in the traffic light grand prix, with the GTD's combination of high torque and low redline, gear changes are frequent. The DSG gear change is much faster and easier than a traditional manual.

I'm happy with what I've got.

No, it's a huge downfall for all the cars. Constantly adapting to how I drive the car (while I'm constantly adapting to traffic around me) makes for an annoying and sometimes unpredictable experience.

One example is a roundabout on a steep hill near where I live. Sometimes the car doesn't want to go at all because it's shifted up too early/too high, and won't kick down (after responding by giving about 90% throttle, I know about the switch at the end but rarely use that). Other times it holds the gear and revs, and on other times it spins the wheels and flies up. I hope the Mk7 has a constant setting (or 2 or 3 set options to choose from). Sport mode (DSG) is not a solution for metropolitan driving.

    .
Perhaps for you, not having any such issue with the R. The MKV GTI we had was pretty good too. It isn't an instant adaptation - it takes a relatively long time for the mechatronics unit to adjust the take off point and change solenoid values.

Go and get the DSG reset and whilst at the dealer, make sure there isnt a software update for it. Ask them to check for error codes, it may well be you need a new mech unit.

Every car made with an ECU constantly adapts - there for a reason
