I have an in car screen mounted video camera and was horrified when I replayed the video to see the dealer "mechanic" dutifully pull a rag from the pocket of his overalls and furiously "polish" the bonnet and guards of my beloved GTI.
The camera only works when the ignition is ON so I didn't expect to see what I did see. They obviously left the ignition on for one reason or another during the service.
My strictest instruction are now .....
Don't wash my car and don't apply any polishing, rubbing to the paintwork of my car.
Yep, I am anal about it.

after the swirl marks on my black GTI when i first picked it up, i'd never let VW do it.
Gotta say tho when I had a mazda - @ City Mazda in melb, they'd wash it really well, and the car never had a swirl mark on it in the 4.5 years I had it. - No idea how they do it there, but the car looked great every time.
My wife is a lazy cow who gets supplied a company car & wouldn't know how to wash a car if her life depended on it. If the dealer offered her free car washes & the dealership was conveniently located then she'd still struggle to allocate 10 minutes of her time to wash the the car.
God i hate sitting in that filthy piece of crap that she drives (and it's only 9 months old)

There is no guarantees that even instructing them to NOT wash car will be followed. I have had our car washed twice even though i told the service agent not to do it (he even wrote it down on the work order). Clearly whoever drives the car off the workshop floor and into the wash bay just doesnt read or care.
I do however get them to vacuum the carpets - they haven't screwed anything up on that at least.

I used to be a detailer for Alfa Romeo and their luxury cars in Brisbane while going through uni, it was one of 3 jobs I did at the time and mainly cos I enjoyed it (paid awful, lol). When the grubby alfa's came in for service, we'd be sure to give them a good scrub and some of them even a polish knowing that it's likely to be the only polish the car has seen since it left the dealership. If I wouldn't do it to my car, I wouldn't someone elses. Granted we weren't washing the same number of cars that a VW dealership/service centre might, but not all sponge-bobs (detailers/cleaners) take steel wool to the car cos it's not theirs.
Though in giving my rant, I'd prefer someone else not touch my car.
