    Changing Spark Plugs on 118TSI

    Hey all,

    Have had my new plugs in for 15k and have just developed a misfire whilst on tune and looking to replace them at home rather then getting slogged 300 again at the dealer.

    Having not done this before in the golf, is there any special tools that are needed and or any fiddley wires, houses etc that need to be removed?

    When is it recommended to change out the plugs in these beasts anyway? (and what with).

    And on a side note, did you see much improvement with the S3 intercooler? I'm in a similar boat, 2 year old 118TSI with an APR Stage 1. It really is what the car should have been out of the factory... but then I suppose you'd be stepping on the GTI's toes a little bit... maybe the 132kW tune used int he Polo GTI for factory tune?

    I think in a standard set up 60 000km is the interval, but with the tuning the life is somewhat shortened and can last anywhere from 10-20k depending on driving conditions etc.

    The part number I have is 03C 903 601 A AND OR NGK PZFR6R8EG which will set you back around $114 from VW spare parts.

    The S3 was a nice addition. feels like to does pull a little harder at the top end and the heat soak is nowhere near as bad on the hot day. A great bang for buck IMO.

    Surely you will be able to buy those spark plugs for less than that price online. I got mine from a spark plug shop in Sydney for about $65 delivered.

    I havent looked closely at the coil pack setup on the 1.4 engines, but if its anything like the GTi/R engines then you need to unplug each ignition coil, pull the ignition coil out and then you can access the spark plugs with a normal spark plug socket and extension.

    Depending on the km's your engine has done, the misfire could be from a dodgy ignition coil too. Reliable and long lasting ignition coils are not VW's strong point.

    Probably spot on Lucas. Am time poor at present however. Have a long drive ahead on the weekend and was after piece of mind that the misfire wasn't slowly turning that engine into a grenade. May look into price of coil packs whilst I'm there also.
    Does anyone know if the Audi R8 retro of coil packs will work in a 118 out of curiosity??

    The 1.4TSI uses a different coil pack setup to the 2.0T, so unfortunately the R8 coil packs will not fit.

    Buying coil packs and/or spark plugs from the dealer will cost you a bomb. I can understand you might need to bite the bullet on the spark plugs if you need them by the weekend, but id be looking to the UK for the coil packs. You will fall over when VW Aust tell you how much they are.

    I suspect that the R8 coil packs won't fit the 118tsi though happy to be proven wrong.

    Just find someone with a 2 litre petrol motor and have a look if they're the same.

    So it appears since my last misfiring episodes (mayish last year) that they have revised the plug again to NGK BKR7EIX Iridium. Is anyone else running these at present?

    Because if thats the case this mob is brissie based and may half that price something savage
