Hey mate, I fitted some shade cloth behind the grill when I traveled western Qld a couple of years ago. Keeps the locusts out no prob and easy to hose off when your able to. No cooling issues either.

Has any body made a bug barrier for there air grills in there GOLF or is there something available from VW as down here in South Australia when you drive between towns there are a lot of locust and grass hoppers around and they are not the best to get on your intercooler as they are a bugger to clean of. ?

Thanks Brian how did you get it behind the bottom grill I have it behind the top grill, but not sure how to get the bottom grill out.
Misfit.
I bought some fly mesh from bunnings, cut it to the required shape and covered the grills from the outside.
I'm on a farm and grassseeds blocking radiators is a perennial problem. Small seeds (eg silver grass, vulpia sp.) will go through fly wire.
I use the grey filter cloth used at the front of domestic air conditioners to keep the seeds out of the front of my Hi Lux and it does a great job - cheap also so change twice/year.
I tried some on my Octavia RS when the shade temp was 37 and it didn't move the water temp. and increased the oil temp 3C-4C.
Used between grill and radiator.
Thanks for all the feedback lads, for the moment I have a fly screen behind the top air grill and in-front of the bottom grill till I find out the best way to pull out the bottom grill to put the screen behind.
