Thread: Broken Parcel shelf lifter cord.

  1. #1

    Broken Parcel shelf lifter cord.

Absolutely no idea how this happened, never removed the parcel shelf for anything! Getting the shopping out the other day and the cord just snapped. The cord on the snapped side seemed very twisted and knotty. Rubber Bobble (My name for it) is not in the pic as I've done a makeshift repair with some Venetian blind cord i had lying around. Any ideas if this is a part I could track down?

Give your VW dealer a call and order in the part...

Was looking at buying a used Mk 5 Golf last year and it had its parcel shelf cord broken as well. Called VW dealer for a quote which was from memory around $100 or so to replace the whole parcel shelf. AFAIK the whole shelf has to be replaced, you can't replace just the cord.

    Cheers

Similar thing happened to me, although it snapped the plastic lug from the rear window surround!

I'm thinking it's going to be an expensive fix, and not too sure if it's going to be covered by warranty.

Once I find a reputable dealer to get my servicing through, I'll ask the question.

Glad to know some other people have had the same problem. Looking at how they are attached it does seem like I might need a whole new parcel shelf! Provided my home made job works silently I might just leave it, If I can't convince the dealer to do it under warranty. Seems like it could be a poor spend especially considering my worry it will happen again. Going to have a good look at the mechanism and see if I can figure out how it happened.

One of my cord anchors broke off when the parcel shelf came loose (back seats were down and I had loaded some boxes in the back, knocking the shelf off it's pivots) and I opened the rear hatch...

The cord anchor looked like it was part of the window trim moulding, so I made a new anchor with a stainless M5 cap screw and turned a small collar/spacer up for the cord to ride on. There was enough plastic in the trim to drill an undersized hole and start tapping a thread. I only started a thread so when I forced the screw in, it would be tight. Worked a treat. Still got to do the other side so they look the same.

Looks better than the plastic anchor IMHO.

    Cheers,
    Cam

Cord should be warranty unless you have abused it (which you appear not to).

Surely you could make something similar from basic parts from a hardware store for $10?

But why would you if it's WARRANTY?
