Brand New Golf - died twice in last two weeks??

    Peeps

a mate of mine just bought a 2012 GTI DSG with no other options. He picked it up two weeks ago and in that time it has died in traffic twice. No warning, no lights on the dash nothing.

He is just driving normally through traffic and it dies - in D and putting around town. He has been able to pull over both times but obviously if it happens on the freeway it could be a lot worse.

    This was in Brisbane.

The dealer now has the car and has indicated they cannot find a fault. They can start it and it runs okay - it seems once the engine cools down the car seems to go back to normal.

RACQ says there is compression, spark but not a proper injector pulse.

So has anyone heard or experienced this in the past and what should he be saying to the dealer to try and diagnose it? It only has 870km and has had no hooning (yet...)

Wow - what a disappointment on a new car.

Obviously this should be left for VW to diagnose, but it would seem that perhaps the ECU is either playing up intermittently, or perhaps there is a wiring fault somewhere and its cutting spark / fuel pump / activating immobiliser etc.

    Agreed, 100%.

It's both surprising and disappointing if the car hasn't logged any faults that the dealer can scan for, to help in diagnosing the problem. If the RACQ have been able to identify an issue then the dealer should be more than capable of performing the same troubleshooting tasks to resolve the issue - fault code or not. If the dealer doesn't give your mate a suitably appropriate response (such as "we will perform a thorough diagnosis and find the problem ASAP, sir!"), then I'd be suggesting he contacts VWA and/or speaks to the service department of another dealership.

From memory, someone else on the forum has had the same problem. I can't remember who, but perhaps look through a few pages of the older threads?

Hope that helps and hope your friend fixes the problem soon!

Have had a 2011 Passat do weird things. Would conk out and fail to restart. When towed back to the dealership, it'd start straightaway and drive off the tilt tray, no fault codes at all.

This went on for months, until it got more frequent until the point where it wouldn't start at all. Reprogramming the keys and the immobiliser, replacing crankshaft position sensors, etc, it was eventually traced to a faulty ECU.

Does the engine cut out or go into "limp mode"?

Completely cuts out. Dealer has managed to make it fault several times and they say it is an earth wire connected to the chassis that has worked loose. Waiting for the report which I will post here for the benefit of others in a similar position in the future...
