I figure you may as well just drill them out. The Lakin holders are made specific to a plate-type and car-type - so it's not like you're ever going to need to put the OEM holder back on....

Glad I got lazy and never bothered, sounds like too much work hehe. Mine are still hanging on with the cheap double sided tape I got from bunnings!

I've just received my Lakin plate brackets / Kingpin covers, and I can't wait to get stuck in with the hammer and drill. I know people have said this before, but I wanted to give Philip at Lakin a big thumbs up for the great customer service - including giving me a call and talking me through the options, rather than just trying to get my order out the door without any thought. Great Work!

Btw guys, if you happen to BYO your own plate. Does the dealer need to refund the slim line fees?

You should make them aware well in advance (like, when you sign your contract if possible) that you'll be supplying your own plates (and CTP if applicable) so that they can just take those fees off the price. Don't wait until you turn up to take delivery of the car, otherwise the plates will already have been paid for and be registered to your car and registration.

My R is ready for delivery. I asked my dealer today to not screw my euro plates in but to use 3M adhesive tape to let me drive home and apply the Lakin plates. He categorically told me that in Victoria that was illegal, and that a dealership is at risk of "losing their licence" by not screwing in the plates.
Does anyone have any specific knowledge of Victorian road laws and where someone could look up the relevant law.

Tell them not to fit them and that you'll do it yourself when you arrive.
Also ask them to show you the documentation which they claim they are restating, because we've heard that before and have searched and come up blank.
If they still carry on, ask them how they do test drives etc with cars (by hanging the "dealer plates" on the back of the car, by closing the strap into the boot etc or hanging the strap over the windscreen wiper).

I think BS from dealer. If anything, the minute you drive out onto public road, the car is yours, you are responsible for displaying rego. plates accordingly.

dealer states that dealer plates are specifically legislated for. I did question him for several minutes but didn't want to enter an argument without knowing the law.
