Nah - the back is fine - it's hardly changed from the GTI or even the previous models. It's the front bumper that is the issue with the MK6 Golfs, ESPECIALLY if you wish to mount the plate directly to the bumper without the use of the VW plate holder. moonblade87's is the first photos I've seen of the Lakin plate holder for direct mounting, and although still not an idea situation, it looks better than the previous attempt which went onto the existing plate holder (it looked too bulky and clumsy.
The Golf R's front bumper is different again, and the mounting holes are different too! So that's the big concern.

Yeah it's slightly different from the GTi - That's why Phil's going to get the measurements for the R from the VW dealership in Launceston ... For some reason there aren't many R's in TAS at the moment ;o)

I'll post when he gets back to me ... It will probably be this time next week as I'm away for the week from tomorrow!!

Looking good on the white GTI. Can't tell from my phone, but would I be able to do this seeing as I still have the plugs from the original plastic holder, but not the pins that clipped it the holder on? ie, does this new flat black metal plate have it's own plugs/screws that simply use the existing holes.

moonblade87's photo shows a screw in the "flat black metal plate", so I assume it's either screwing into the original plugs, holes, or has it's own plugs which the screws fit into

Correct - I believe Philip has supplied screws with the bracket that fit into the original holes, but if you order a plate, Philip will happily fabricate and supply whatever you decide looks best for you. Here are some alternate suggestions he's made to me:

These are thin enough that I could machine the face of the front bracket to recess the screw head to sit flush. In this way, our bracket could be mounted directly to the car using the existing holes, while allowing a totally secure fitting, at the same time doing away with the overly heavy look.

elisiX, if you're thinking about it, I'd suggest you shoot Philip an email - he's really helpful and can make lots of suggestions for what suits your tastes best. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Thanks for that - it looks good.

So does the plate bracket against the front bumper, or is there some nylon standoffs behind it? I'm just wondering whether it will start collecting dirt and leaves behind it, or whether there is enough space for them to simply slide through.

Many thanks moonblade87! The result looks very good IMO, and I reckon I'll get the same plate made up for my GTI.

    No problem =)

    Glad I could help.

Corey, the bracket has some nylon standoffs behind it. Oh and i forgot to mention the venture shield was a complete bumper kit including top of the rear bumper, door cusps and door sills. And the installation went around the brackets, not underneath them (so no protection behind the brackets).
