And that's exactly my point. If you don't take the 1 option that fits but instead select one of the 56 other options, you either:
1) Have a plate which doesn't fit the holder
2) Remove the holder and are left with holes in your bumper
3) Remove the holder and spend several hundred $ getting your bumper spak-filled and resprayed
I mean seriously... they're pretty stupid options, all for a stupid feature which isn't needed
Yep, the full size VIC euro option is correct. VIC is lucky that they give you the option of sizes independent of the style.
@ $695 a pair is pretty expensive - but all thinsg different come at a cost.Yep, the full size VIC euro option is correct. VIC is lucky that they give you the option of sizes independent of the style.
In one of these posts, someone mentioned that VW have said that GTI's should come with the EURO plates via the dealer? Is this more like an added option or comes free?
Thanks
$695 is the cost for personalised Euro plates in VIC. $495 is the cost for regular Euro plates, plus $40 extra for the small size. Vplates.com.au - Custom Plates by VicRoads | - Euro Plates
Just thought I'd show my new plates, ignore the crummy photo and wet car! I followed GTIcams great instructions to remove the numberplate holder, but changed things up just a little bit. I bought the lakin plate covers but I really don't like them, I decided to go for a naked look, The back was easy to do with the full size euro plate but I wasn't sure about how to mount the front. I ended up bending the plate to completely hug the bumper and then used 5 waterproof 3m command strips. Removable, no holes, and I tell you that numpberplate does not budge! I'll try and post some better photos later but I'm loving the clean look!
P.S, If anyone wants those lakin plate covers, Full size euro at the back and slimline at the front just PM me and i'll send them for cost of postage.
Update: plate covers have found a home.

Correct, they legally can't order them for you but I did get them to throw them in when I negotiated. I got it in writing first from them then ordered the $695 custom black euro plates and got them to reimburse me directly when I picked the car up. They put the plates on for me as well. I think the black euros look great especially if car is dark in colour cause the coloured VIC logo really stands out like a royal crest! I don't have them on with plate covers and they fit perfectly on the GTI, the black holder on the front bumper was specifically designed for the euro plates so it all fits in very nicely. To those who are undecided on plate covers, I recommend going "nude" with these plates cause the covers just make them look tacky, similar to headlamp protector covers or car-bras.

Looks great Lairster! Smart idea using 3M tape. It's great stuff and if the need arises, comes off without marking. Thanks for the compliment too. Nice to have some feedback. Thanks.
I've been keeping an eye out for a smaller, low profile plug that I can paint body colour to match the bumper. Will post the result when I do it - won't be for a while though, I've got a shed-load of work to do on my aeroplane...
Cheers,

Was your Lakin plate the type that attaches to the ugly plastic adapter, or directly to the bumper bar? And did you manage to get any photos of it attached to your car before you passed it on?
I'm considering a new Lakin plate that's the same height as my small premium plate, and attaches direct to the bumper. But I'd like to see pictures first before I go ahead.
