I look forward to hearing how you go Adam - please post pics when you can. I have personalised plates that I'll transfer from old car to GTI when it arrives, but my plates are quite small - 3 letters 1 number. Has anybody else used the method described to fit a smaller plate?
MY10 Golf GTI - Candy White - DSG - 18" Detroits - Leather
I just ordered a rear bracket that has been custom made for the holes drilled into my rear bumper by the dealer.
Philip also suggest me to just get a plate cover for the front since i'm using a euro plate and it'll fit onto the holder perfectly.

That's why i'm thinking of ditching the crappy plastic plate holder and then could use covers that dont require drilling, or may not even put any on.

Saw this pic on another forum and a euro plate doesn't look too bad at all with the stock number plate holder.
I assume tape may not hold it with the curvature though, unless you bend it first?
It looks like there is a small screw in each top corner.
The other thing is, that's the ONLY plate in 56 options in NSW (including 6 euro options) that actually fits the plate holder properly. What if you wanted one of the other 55 styles? I think this situation sucks
