FYI I have contacted those guys in Tassie and they seem to be right on the ball; they went out to a VW dealer and measured up a Mk6 GTI for me !! They are super responsive and very helpful, I am ordering the rear mounting plate from them but on the MK6 I dont think you need the front mounting plate, its good to go from the factory

I have purchased Victorian BLACK Euro plates with my initials/Birthday (cheesy I know); in VIC I think black is only for personalised Euroes, $695 but when you have pute $50k down on a hatchback, what the hell...

FYI I have a reflex silver on order, I think the black looks great on Silver/Red/White

    Personal choice I guess

I have personalised premium plates now (slimline black on white) and want to "re-style" them to the slimline premium plates, with metallic silver lettering on black (for my Reflex Silver GTI) when it gets here.

I want to put them on my current car, only a week or a few days before picking up the GTI, so it all looks nice and shiny when I drive away from the dealer
I just ordered my premium black with gold characters. The receipt mentioned it will take up to 21 days.

"When the new plate is ready to be picked up we will send a letter to you. This normally takes up to 21 days. It is important that we have your correct address, as this is the only way we have of notifying you that the plates have been delivered. You can change your address at myRTA.com or by calling 131 758.
Thank you for using the myplates website."

    Oh - Cool.
    Thanks niulf & ozvino.

I found a "Contact Us" on the myplates website and sent them an email, and received a reply today......

    Thankyou for your email.
The plates will normally take between 2-3 weeks to be available for collection from the elected RTA Motor Registry.
ozvino - 4 days is pretty good !!

I also received my VIN today, so the GTI is built, but doesn't show on the tracking site yet. I guess not long now..........

I was starting to feel quite concerned whilst reading all this....
Had not even given the front number plate holder a thought....oops, oh well.
I am hoping it wont be a big issue on a black car though.

The Lakin Plates site is very handy indeed. Time to order my number plate bits.
Another bonus was the close up of a GTI front bar (other pics here have "expired")

Dave - would you need the mounting plate on the front bar to cover the outer holes ??
I wouldn't think that the plate itself would cover these.

re: Best number plate / plate holder style

I just ordered last week a set of plate brackets from Lakin Plates: I have black NSW euro plates (ie with slimline front) for my carbon steel 3dr GTI (which is due to arrive in Port Kembla - finally! - on 23 Mar).

For the front, I'm getting a full-sized Euro plate bracket in black, which will mount to the nasty black plastic thing using screws that will be hidden behind my number plate. Therefore, I'll have the front slimline plate mounted in the middle of a black metal mounting plate which in turn will cover the entire nasty black plastic thing and all its holes and indentations.

Philip at Lakin Plates has been nothing short of excellent to deal with. At the outset, he didn't even have the Mk6 GTI on his website, so after my initial enquiry he went to the local dealer to take photos and measurements!

That's actually not a bad idea mate! Good suggestion!

I was thinking of removing the plate holder and filling the holes in the bumper and having it resprayed - but that's a much easier solution
