NSW didn't until very recently. In fact, we had to pay an additional $100 per year to have even a standard non-personalised Europlate. This changed around March or May 2009 when the range expanded considerably and many of the prices dropped and some annual fees, including on standard Euro plates, were removed.

I believe QLD has been and still is the leader as far as number of varieties goes (at least with standard sized plates and the # of designs). The last time I looked most were still just a one off cost and didn't have annual fees.

The price of standard NSW Euro plates went from an annual fee of $130 to a once only fee of $400.

Good value perhaps for a perpetual usage right against the former $130 annual fee but it still looks like a gouge against the $80 charged for NSW black on white slimline (formerly "premium") plates.

But that's the NSW gubment for you! Best money can buy!! (And they're wanting to privatise the myplates.com.au business hence a lot of the changes I gather.)

I'm less pissed about the pricing for plates than I am about VW Australia not paying attention to the actual plates available. They are essentially forcing us to use the white Euro plate. Anything else will look just silly. How many people will cough up the $400 for the Euro white vs $90 for the black on white premium at under $100?

The WA standard euro is $410, but it's white with a blue side panel. The full custom is a whopping $1295! It's still white, but you can choose the colour of the side panel. Yay. They are all 520x112mm.

The slimline aluminium are $210, 372x110mm and come in white on black or black on white. We have the slimline white on black on our other car, and would be happy with it, except for the size of the Golf's front plate holder, which is the width and height of the euro plate.

I might stick on our white on blacks from the other car and see how it looks. Being predominantly black, the plate holder might just blend in. Anyone done this yet?

I'd still be very surprised if the front plate holder did not come off with a few screws or something. Then as someone has already said, the question is does the slim numberplate cover the screw holes.

If not, perhaps one can specify no plate holder when placing a factory order . . .

I am not sure but I think in one of other threads one of the dealers indicated that it can't be ordered without black plate holder

    It is coming from here

Then consider the question closed. The holes are about 465mm apart, so only the euro is going to cover them. When you look at the plate holder up close, it's pretty obvious where the bolts sit. I pulled the holder back slightly to confirm that I could see the bolts anchored into the front bumper.

Thanks for looking Muprhy, and thanks to David for his thread correcting the information about being able to order the car without the numberplate holder.

It truely is a shame that this is the stance that VW have taken, as though it may be fine for Europe, the fact is it only fits a single plate in this country

Very true! Even more reason to be disappointed in VW in this respect.
