It's a worry that so many of us are suffering these door felt/rubber squeaks but having looked at the 22 pages of this thread I am amazed people are still bothering with temporary solutions. A US forum details that the problem is the felts rubbing on the tops of each door against the body. It's got nothing to do with whether it's waxed or polished or soaped or clean. It's a bad design by VW. The felt is simply too thin. The solution in the US? Buy some flexible 4mm or 6mm irrigation tubing from Bunnings and insert it in the gap between the two bits of felt in your doors. Two months on it has worked perfectly for me. No more sticky rubbers, messy door sills with gummi pflege overruns and finally after two years, a quiet car. The guys on the US forums were engineers and said that the doors simply needed thicker seals and the felt was to blame. I didn't believe it as the felt is so soft but try this fix and you will be amazed.

Check out these photo's as requested, use the normal 4mm irrigation conduit which is firm plastic this performs best, front doors from about the mirror to the top edge and for the rear doors just the top edge will do the trick. You can buy 10m in most hardware shops under $4.00, you will only need about 3.5m.

Just insert the conduit as shown cut off excess, there is no need to fix the conduit, it will stay in place contained by the door seal.

Good luck it's always been a quiet car that's the reason for the irritation any abnormal sound is noticeable but this raises the bar a notch further for those with squeaking door rubbers, I suspect this was a problem with earlier model MKVI's. I've been in a recent model with 10K on the clock and didn't notice the squeaking so maybe there has been a modification to the felt/rubber.

Is it always that noticeable or is the reveal in the 2nd photo just for the camera? Sure it would raise a few eyebrows from passengers or if you ever sold it.

It's hardly noticeable, it just looks like part of the seal. It's unlikely anyone would notice it as non standard.

The close up shot is just that to show the conduit in place.

the clicking noise is driving me crazy!

The dealer insulated (not sure exactly what) the outside black shiny plastic panels on the B pillar part of each front door. That is, they took the black plastic off, stuck some insulating tape between the metal part of the door and the black plastic piece. The noise disappeared and has never returned.

I believe was/is a common problem and a dealer should know about it. I'm actually surprised that VW hasn't fixed this at the factory - as it's a very simple fix to a very annoying problem.

    Hope this helps!
hey guys, i know it been discussed before but I still could not figure it out.
I've noticed the clicking/ticking noises from the driver and passenger-side B-pillar and its driving me crazy! is it a known issue? because my dealer has no knowledge of this kind of problem, do the insulation under the black plastic works?
    plz help!
    thanks

It worked for me but the service manager at my local dealer insisted on taking it out so he could fix it properly. Whatever they did has worked perfectly for three weeks. All he told me is it was a mechanical fix, not just lube. Maybe door catch adjustment?

My 1.5 month old MY13 GTI developed a really bad rattle about 2 weeks ago which sounded like it was coming from the drivers side B pillar. Based on info in this thread I pushed on door frames/windows from the outside, and low and behold the rear drivers side door started to make the exact rattle noise that was driving me insane.

Looks like the bad door seal/felt issue. Went to bunnings, bought a 10 metre roll of 4mm irrigation tubing for $4. Fitted it all along the felt seal along the door. Rattle gone! Back to a brand new no rattle car!!

Thanks for all the help guys!!

I will like to say a big thank you to whoever suggested Gummi fledge, and also to the one that mentioned the crucial areas that mustn't be left out. I ordered the product online for $14 or so and applied it the first time but still continued to sound like the door lock was loose. So I decided to lubricate all the locks and no change whatsoever. Finally I decided to go back to the thread and read everything again. And lo and behold I stumbled on the tip on applying it to a particular door seal that the front door closes on. I did it, left it to dry and cruised it on the crappy road in my area and guess what NO SINGLE RATTLE at all! Now I love my sweet 90tsi again. Thanks for everyone in this forum, you rock!

Mine is a rattle in and around the driver's footwell. it only occurs in winter which suggests the cold temp is contracting something probably made of metal. of course it only makes a "metalic rattle" noise (kind of like a marble bouncing on a tile at hight frequency) when I'm stopped in traffic and that's only two hours a day! kill me.
    Any ideas??
