I didn't contribute to the poll as I own a more "grown up" VW (Passat CC) rather than the R. But for what its worth, I'm in my early 40s and had just sold a WRX to get into my new CC.

Its actually quite a strange transition, people used to look at me strangely since I was a greying fella in a suit driving a "young hoons" performance car. They now look at me with far greater respect (even though the CC is a faster car lol). Having said all of that, if the R was out at the time that I bought my CC, I may have been tempted but really love the extra luxury, space and comfort of the big brother VW (I ruled out the BMW 135i cause it was too hard and small for me).

One final thing to add: I have read a few comments about assumptions about what "age" the typical person can be before they can afford a circa $50K car. For what its worth, I have (nearly) always had a nice car despite not being born with a "silver spoon". My first car (purchased with my own funds) was a BMW 3 series when I was 21. I did live at home at the time though!

You comment about the transition to the CC made me smile.. I would suggest folk are admiring the car rather than allocating any felling toward you personally.

Anyway I spoke to a BMW dealer in the gym once and he was telling me how long term buyers would swap their cars back and forth.. from the 2 door coupes then back to the x5 then back again.. I reckon the urge will call you back to something more agile in the future and there is nothing wrong with that. I have been in a Liberty for the last 5 years and it is a great cruiser.. I wanted something that was a little more chuckable..

I just turned 27, I own a GTI, but could have gone for the R. Decided to save the extra cash and put towards the mortgage instead. Plus we have a kid on the way, but I like to swap cars every 3 years or so, so an R might be on the agenda down the line.

I've worked since I was 18 and have had a fair few nice cars, and have my own home, married etc. With the right budgeting and hard work it's possible. Like a lot of the others I've read, I don't drink, smoke, do drugs etc so I generally save most of it and like to blow some of it on nice cars from time to time.

    I am 25 and own a GTI. MK5

I work hard and lucky enough to live at home. Thinking of a R32 as some online are going at good prices.

The best thing IMO about having just read this thread for the first time is how cool some peoples stories are, and hard work put in to buy something you are passionate about. People that buy the $20k Focus just are simply not as passionate about getting form A to B as we are. ;p If you want something, you work hard for it.. simple and regardless of age.

With my last 3 cars I've gone from a GT Subaru Liberty to a 500HP VE SS [6M| which I love and are currently selling to buy the R. The R is just so easy to drive, has more features and functions that you really need (but we all love), and goes like stink. I'm sacrificing the room of course coming out of the VE (with 5 kids). One of the biggest things that sold me was the DSG gearbox after a drive in FLM's car.

So if anyone is looking to buy a V8.. let me know lol

I totally resent that. Yet again everyone here likes to generalise and assume something about someone depending what car they drive. I am currently a Focus driver, and I dare say I have one of the best looking ones on the road. I have had my Focus for 8 years, and still the other month I saw someone taking a photo of it while I was up at the local shops. Why was that? Maybe the passion I put into it.

    LOL.
    Have changed colour choice AGAIN.
Now selected Rising Blue as my current drive is also black and I want some differentiaition when it arrives.
Especially as I am waiting a Frackin eternity!!!!!!!!!
    Also thinking of adding ACC.
Initially thought it was a bit of a wank, as I wont be doing track days in it, but if one thinks of resale down the track......That is if I ever get the smile off my face and want to sell it.

Big tick for the Blue.. it is the only thing that really Screams that it is an R.. and I reckon for the $ the ACC would be an investment you wouldnt regret
