Xenons a must, you won't be able to do those later without much pain and a lot of dosh.

In regards to the Detroits, I was in the VW dealer at Hornsby this morning and there was a stack of 4 of them (3 in box, 1 on display) which had a sign that said they were on sale for $2800 including tyres, down from $4300. Not sure if that's just that dealer though. Still more than twice the price of ticking the box at order time though, but I guess you'll get a few bucks for the 17s on fleabay or something.

Why would someone who wants certain options (let's say RNS 510, Dynaudio, DCC and DSG) be interested in getting a base model R instead?

The base model R doesn't have the RNS 510, Dynaudio, DCC or DSG so unless they desperately want a bigger turbo and AWD at the expense of all the other options why on earth would the R come into the equation.

Yeah not sure I understand the comparisons between loaded up GTI's and base R's except for dollar value.

I was merely pointing it out maverick, no need to shoot me down. I know everybody is different but if i could afford an R i would have gotten one even if it was just the base model with no options. If this well optioned gti is worth waiting for, perhaps it might also be worth waiting for a base model R??

But this is just my opinion...

So I'm thinking very carefully about buying a new GTI. The stock GTI is doable price wise, but with all the options I'd want the price is pushed to unobtainable.

Here's a list of the options I would want on my purchase, could anybody point out if there's an opportunity to be able to add particular options after buying the car, or if there's an aftermarket alternative I can look at?

    18" Detroit Wheels
Adaptive Chassis Control (I'm assuming this is definitely something to be ordered with the car)
    Bi Zenon Headlights
    Park Assist
    RVC
    Electronically Adjustable Drivers Seats
    Media Interface
    Bluetooth
    RNS510 Satellite Navigation

Any help would be much appreciated, I just dont know if I should wait longer so I can get everything in one go, or order sooner and add on later..

    Thanks guys!
In order to get the specification I wanted I had to ask for a number of options to be fitted by the dealer so I can confirm the following CAN be retrofitted:

    18" Detroit Wheels (kinda obvious)
    Media Interface
    Bluetooth
    RNS510 Satellite Navigation

As for the others on your list, here's what I've been told/read:

Adaptive Chassis Control (I'm assuming this is definitely something to be ordered with the car) - Can be done but requires extensive re-wiring and mechanical work. Personally this wasn't on my list of must haves. I drove cars with both and thought the non-ACC equipped car was well up to the job.
Bi Zenon Headlights - Can't be done by the dealer. To do it yourself and be legal you'll need headlight washers and auto-levelling fitted.
Park Assist - Can be dealer fitted.
RVC - Can be dealer fitted.
Electronically Adjustable Drivers Seats - Only available in leather (I wanted cloth) seats and can't be done by the dealer.

    Hope that helps!

Are you certain about this? The two dealers I spoke to could only install non-OEM rear sensors only, obviously the Park Assist would require the fronts installed (and at a very precise location to ensure the system functioned).

It makes no sense, why would anyone choose a base model R over a fully loaded GTI? This is like a 118TSI purchaser with all the options changing their order to a base model GTI.

Seems unlikely that someone who wants that many options would be prepared to drop them in return for AWD and a bigger turbo.
