Thread: 7500K service - who's getting it done?

  1. #161

I'm pretty handy, thanks to The Army mostly. I can change every fluid on a Rover or UniMog in just a few minutes, purge the diesel lines, change the filters and in a pinch fiddle with the (albeit minor) electrics etc but there is something about doing it on my brand new VW I'm not so sure about.

As far as I am concerned parts come to $100-120. They want $170-190 for 30 minutes labour which an apprentice is going to do anyway.

Anyway, thanks AdamD. I will be making a call. Flagstaff is just around the corner from me.

Edit: The reason I was so keen to head up and get the dealer to do it was because of the other stuff I need looked at.

I plan on doing this as well soon - my car just hit 6 months and has 5,000km.

I will supply the oil myself (Mobil 1 5W30) and have my own oil filter I bought from the VW dealer.

Who in Brisbane is good to do this service for me (log book stamped too)

Just serviced mine last weekend (5000km and 6 months). I got Castrol Longlife III oil from the dealership for $80 and oil filters from the same place for $13 each.

Installed my ECS Tuning aluminium oil filter housing and magnetic oil drain plug at the same time.

You shouldn't need a service stamp for an oil change.. just have it done at the 15K service..

Also - make sure that the Mobil 1 you have purchased complies with the VW rating of 505/507. I have a 20litre drum of Mobil 1 (5w-30) that i used on my previous car (200sx) and i can't use it in the Golf because it doesn't meet the 504/507 rating. In saying that, i think that Mobil 1 now complies with this rating.

So im selling the remainder of my drum of oil to my brother to use in his car - and i just bought the same oil that VW uses from the parts dept at the dealership (Castrol Longlife III)

    That is correct.

There are many versions and viscosity grades of Mobil 1 - and the only version that has VW 504/507 approval is Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30.

"Mobil 1 5W-30" never has, and never will get VW 504/507 approval (unless it undergoes a significant change in formula) as it's not technically possible to meet certain specifications simultaneously.

Had it done. $190 at Osborne Park VW while i had the wastegate clip fitted. Plus a few extra bucks for a wheel alignment/rotation.

They didn't change the oil. I asked the service manager and he was strong on side of "VW prefer us not to do that". Who am i to argue with somebody actually trained... so i didn't change it.

Whether one decides to change the oil + filter in between services is completely up to you. I might guess that the driving conditions in Perth isn't as arduous as Sydney.

But that raises the question - if they didn't change the oil + filter, what exactly did they do in exchange for handing over 190 of your hard earned dollars (apart from getting your wheels rotated)? Clip doesn't count as I assume it's a warranty job.

    +1
What did you get in return for $190?

I'd also be pretty annoyed at having to pay for an alignment at such early kilometres unless I'd belted a kerb.

I know this is a MK6 Golf thread. I have a 2011 petrol DSG Tig. Given the similarities I thought, I too would through my 2cents in. I've read this thread through in it's entirety 3 times now in addition to my manual.

    I have decided to get a VW specialist to change my oil at 7,500km at almost precisely 6months since delivery. My decision to do this as;
    1. I don't have the ability to change the oil myself (I know there are plenty of instructions and it appears a relatively simple task but I am happy to pay for it).
    2. I trust my VW specialist (note not a dealer) to replace with the correct grade of oil and filter.
    3. I am having an APR tune applied at the same time (2 birds with one stone).
    4. I drive in Sydney.
    5. I do alot of trips of 5km or less in stop start traffic.
    6. I'm a spirited driver, however, I never press the car over 3,500 revs until the engine temp oil is displaying on the MFD as around 95degrees.
    7. It makes me feel good that the oil is being changed.

As I said for these reasons I have decided to change my oil. Thanks for people's posts, I can honestly say it has provided me with information and I've enjoyed reading it.
