So I'm kind of torn now - I bought a new car and expect to have the full warranty, but also know from expereince how much crap is dumped into the oil during run in, and the thought of leaving that in there for 15000km makes me shudder.

Not sure what to do now, I could take it to a non dealer workshop or do it myself, or simply leave it and take the risk of it wearing out before I was ready to pass it on.
Ok, they don’t want to change oil after 7500km (warranty issue) but what is happening with 12 months time interval … does it count for the first oil change… and does it count from production date (including transport time and time before delivered to customer?

Yes, it counts from production date.

Mines nowhere near that - its only a smidgen over 4 months since it rolled off the floor in Germany.
    Its here!

Mine started from delivery date (car was nearly 6 months out of the factory when delivered) and there was no suggestion of any warranty issue at the 12-month service even though it had done but 5000Km.

Had I known what was about to happen, I'd still be driving the old Cressida — we were going on a long tour and I thought a TDI would be nice, then circumstances changed unexpectedly and the thing's hardly been used.

I think you if you've got to 7500km then it probably doesn't matter (you should have changed at 1000-1500km). I've only ever bothered with 15,000km services & at 55,000km there is no oil usage or odd noises from the engine. I'm intending to keep this car for a while & engine problems due to lubrication are low on my list of concerns - I'm more worried about carbon build up in the intake.

If you really do want a 7500km oil change then:
    1. tell the dealer you consider your driving patterns constitute severe service (short trips, etc)
    2. Buy an OEM filter & go and see that VW specialist in Queenbeyan & get it changed with 504/507 oil.

Service period & warranty start from date of delivery. My car was 9 months old when I took delivery - I would have been spewing if they reduced the warranty by 9 months or I was expected to get a service done 3 months after taking ownership.

can't agree. Delivery date is the datum.
my car was built Nov 07, complied & delivered July 2008. First service due July 2009 or 15,000km.
    Warranty expires July 2011.

Do you think that all those 2007 build Roomsters that have been hanging around for 2.5 years have been getting 12 monthly oil changes while they sit in the holding yard?

It is little bit confusing... I can't see anything specific about first service (mineral oils) in Service manual... but 2.5 years without oil change plus 15000km - if You buy oil from VW dealer, there is note on that bottle that it should not be used if more than 3 years old.

As I've said before, I think people get a bit "excited" about this stuff. They are just engines, the operating environment is relatively benign & the period of ownership compared to design life is usually quite minor.

They should have oil changed before they were delivered. It is said to even think that they would be driven another 12 month and had the oil in engine changed after 3 1/2 years. The life of the oil in the engine is not 3 1/2 years. Oil oxidize when is open to air and moisture and in contact with metals and other elements.

Why would they recommend changing oils more often if the car is driven under severe driving conditions?

Here is why I changed oil in our Tiguan that is production date May 2010 at 1048km. New engine is producing more blow by gases, more metal wear particles (that will cause even more oxidation). Oil is heated on contact with surfaces that are running in due to increased friction to much higher temperature than in engine that is already run in.

I choose not to believe the servicing sticker on the windscreen.

    Edit:
Of course you can't go wrong if you go by that sticker and your dealer recommendation if you keep your car for 3-6 years and whole term of your car ownership is covered by the warranty. In that case I would make sure that they can't say that the warranty doesn't cover this or that because it is normal wear and tear.
