I just got mine done today at Prestige and Performance. My car has 5,400 km and is 7 months old. Timed it for today as I took it out on the track on the weekend.

I supplied my own oil (Castrol 5W-30 as specified by VW) and genuine oil filter.

All up, cost (which was really only labour) was $83, including tyres rotated and other fluids topped up. Plus I got the stamp in the book (at the back where all non scheduled services go)

Oil was $52 as Repco (with RACQ discount)
Oil Filter was $27 after trade discount\

All up, $162 so not bad for the added piece of mind.

I think a dealer would charge $200+ - by supplying my own oil and parts, I saved a few extra dollars.

    Hey guys

    So I'm very confused!!

Can anyone confirm that the engine has a "run in" oil that should remain for 15k kms or 12 months.

I am in the unique position of having a car with 27k on the clock but with an engine with 4.5k(replaced in Nov).

I am about to do my 36month service as per schedule but should I change the oil?!
(Please note: I have posted similar under "3 year service confusion" before getting onto this)

    Thanks!

Yours is a (somewhat) unique case because you have a crate engine.

To answer your question about run-in oil - some people swear yes, others swear no. My personal view is that the "run in" oil is a fairly standard 504-507 oil fitted at the factory - maybe part-mineral - and VW feel their manufacturing tolerances are sufficiently good to preclude the need for a super-coarse full mineral oil for the first 1,000-5,000km.

If I were you, I would ask to speak to the dealer service manager when you take your car in (and not just the suit behind the desk, or a junior spanner). Explain the situation to the manager, and ask him specifically what he thinks is appropriate. My guess is he'll recommend retaining the original oil until the engine has done closer to 15,000km, which conforms to VAG's own schedule for a new car. But if you're personally not happy with that - and several members aren't - then take the car to a specialist and get the oil dropped when the engine's done 5,000km.

There is no definitive answer, because no one has access to VW's engineers, let alone ask them questions. If you haven't noticed, most internet threads are 99% conjecture.

However, I'm of the view that no mineral-based oil would last long in a TSI engine, let alone 15k or 12 months. Hence, the factory fill is unlikely to be mineral.

I'm also of the view that you won't do any more harm in changing it at 7,500 km/6 months than you would at 15,000 km/12 months.

More conjecture perhaps, but not unreasonable IMO.

That's rubbish Only 67.4% are conjecture - and that's fact. Oh, wait, maybe that's conjecture. Better make it 67.5%.

    MY12 Golf R Servicing

Today I brought my car into Essendon VW after 3,000 kms and was only given a fluid top-up and tyre pressure check. This is the first time I've brought it back as I was told when purchasing the car to bring the car in for a service between 2,000-4,000 kms. Under the impression, I assumed the first service was suppose to be an oil change and full inspection of the car but today was then told that isn't done until 15,000 kms. Is this right that when you bring in the car for the first time they only do a fluid top-up and tyre pressure check? From what I've heard from everyone else the first time you bring back the car, the dealership should be servicing the car no matter what manufacturer it is?

Some stealers offer the complimentary random 1000mile or so check. It has its merits. But a decent PD should sufice.

I was told "we don't want to see you for 12mths/15000" suited me just fine.

Had the 1000km 'check' on mine when I bought it. Not an oil change (some line about special oil from the factory). Pretty sure the 1000kms check is just that.. It is not a service as such.
