Have you tried contacting an independent vw specialist to see what they say or another dealer?
Hi Folks, my Golf is just about to celebrate its 3rd birthday and coincidentally has done exactly 45,000 km. So all I need is a 45K/3YR service right? Unfortunately it's not so simple.
The previous owner did quite high mileage when the car was new so here's how it was serviced:
May '09 0 km delivery
November '09 15K service
May '10 30K service
June '11 2YR service (36,000 km)
Now according the the VW Dealer where the car was sold, it is now due for its FOURTH service, i.e. 60K/4YRs, for which they would love to charge me $1165. However I maintain that because the car is only 3 years old and has done 45K, then that's the service that is required. As far as I can tell, apart from some additional inspections, the only difference at 60K is a set of spark plugs which my car shouldn't need yet.
Would appreciate your opinions, thanks.
P.S. Dealer also tryed to talk me into a 'DSG Service' ($500). Of course we all know the 7 speed DSG doesn't need servicing...

It's just +1 year or +15,000km from your last service. Whichever comes first.
Your last service was at 36,000km + 15,000km = 51,000km > 45,000km. Not this.
But it's almost +1 year. 2+1 = 3rd year service!
How are they justifying the 4th year service?
In addition to the oil and oil filter change, your car may or may not need the following work, depending on what was done in the previous services, and when they were done.
- Pollen filter should be changed every 30 000 km or 2 years. If it was replaced as part of the 30k service back in May 2010, then it's due.
- Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years. If it was replaced as part of the 30k service back in May 2010, then it's due.
- Air filter is also due. Should be changed every 45 000 km or 3 years.
You can replace the spark plugs at the next service, they aren't due until 60 000 km or 4 years.
Your next service would be the 60k/4yr, which normally includes the pollen filter and brake fluid, so it would be up to you to inform them and make sure they don't carry out the work (if they're due now).
Which independant is charging $580 for the 60,000km service?
Surely that quote is for a manual diesel.

Doesn't surprise me that the dealer doesnt know what they are talking about. Every experience i have had with my VW dealership (most recently this morning when i dropped it off to get the alarm looked at) is that they havent got a god damn clue about the car and what is required.
Needless to say, it had its 1yr service done a few weeks ago at the Audi dealership down the road. Compare the pair:
VW quote for 1yr service = $420
Audi quote for 1yr service = $275
I'll let you guys decide which option i chose. Plus the fact that i personally know several of the employees at the Audi dealership, i placed my much loved car in their care.
