It could be coil packs or dirty spark plugs or injectors... but really, first thing should be a compression test to rule out a cracked piston. Sadly with these engines it's more likley than the other things.
Hi guys,
Been moving around a bit and a little behind on servicing (past time but not kms) have had a little issue with rough idle, hoping its not a piston issue. Just wondering from those who have had engine issues what the tell tale signs were? Mine seems to be fine if I just give it a little gas other than that I guess I can only describe it as a little lumpy - no engine lights or anything like that.
Due to locations I've been in the last couple of years, the car hasn't been serviced by VW.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you. | Refer a Friend - AussieBroadband $50 Credit
Would I only notice the issue at idle, or are there other symptoms to look out for?
As it gets worse, you'll notice missing, potential pinging, and maybe an anger management light.
Probably make sure you're using only 98 petrol.
Being the internally explodey engines, probably get it compression checked as above.
Sorry dude, sell now or be up for a ridiculous amount of money on a rebuild, and if you're behind on your servicing, even if it is time... Goodwill is even further out of reach, even though it's a known fault.
