    some might say a 5 dr hatchback is no sports car. however the 3 dr range (of gti R and rocco) are. that a ferrari, porsche, lambo etc are the only sports cars. has to be a coupe to be a sports car. and so on and so on...........

    90TSI = non sport
    77TDI= non sport
    118TSI= non sport
    103TDI = non sport

    to quote VW on the 118TSI:

    "Pinnacle of Performance
    Place your own stamp on your Comfortline’s features. With the optional Sport Package, designed just for the Comfortline, you’ll enjoy. 17” Seattle alloy wheels, sports suspension and sports seats - for that extra chicane-handling performance, with low tyre-pressure indicator to help you stay fully pumped. Dark tinted rear side and rear windows optimise daytime driving, while front fog lights with static cornering illuminate any low-speed corners you may turn."

    that's a lot of SPORT equipment for a non-sport model!!!!
    Buddy, you're making my argument for me!
    As I said, the 118TSI is not a sport model. Having all the "sports" components as OPTIONS just proves this. Because obviously if it WERE a sports model, all those parts would already be on the car.

    OK fair point the 118 has been reworked or detuned in conjunction with the 7speed dsg for economy..

    however i still believe the 118 is positioned as the sport model without stepping up to the pointy end where the GTI and R sit.

    so where does the 118 sit in comparison to the 90 77 and 103?

    90TSI & 77TDI = Trendline
    118TSI & 103TDI = Comfortline.

    I'm sorry to be upsetting anyone here by pointing out what Volkswagen call and position the cars as, but this is the reality of the MK6 range.

    MariusGT, I mean no offense to you or anyone else. I can see you drive a GT Sport. In the MKV range VW decided to place the GT's inbetween the Comfortline's and GTI/R32, but with the MK6 they decided to not do this. Maybe this is why they offer the "Sports Package" you mention. Either way, the 118TSI is on the same level as the 103TDI - as the two Comfortline models.

    I don't think anyone here is being particularly constructive.

    Whilst this has nothing to with what the OP questioned, obviously the 118 has more power and torque than the others - 90tsi, 77tdi etc. however it is simply not marketed under an associated high performance label.

    Useless semantic arguments don't help any body.

    to the original question at hand, APR do not do in house performance tuning for volkswagen.

    What was the question?

    Basically I see the ask as. "Is the 1.4 TSI in the forthcoming POLO GTI the same engine as in the 118 TSI Golf but simply in a higher state of tune or are there other mechanical differences?

    and it looks like VW has enough confidence in the 7 speed DSG to accept the higher power and torque figures of the new Polo GTI - or are there any mechanical differences in the DSG in the Polo GTI and the 118TSI?

    Haven't looked yet but as stated it's probably somewhere in the Polo forum.
    You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

    It is the identical engine and gearbox

    The question was answered in the 2nd post of the thread (by myself, although the question of the gearbox wasn't asked until you bought it up).

    Not worth getting too worked up over the "sports" tag anyway as it obviously means different things to different people. I mean this ad says it all

    hey hey, i am not upset or offended... and i expect no one else is.

    it's called a discussion and though a little off topic--> not far off!

    anyway. it's not a semantic argument. i understand what coreying is saying and i do agree with him to a point...
    putting aside all the marketing jargon and "high performance label" of an R or GTI-> the 118 IS the sport alternative withing the regular range.

    just my opinion.

    Lol. Good point.

    Although, with the Golf, the "Sport" tag affects insurance, and also what cars the P platers can obtain access to. For example, a P plater can get an except to drive the 118TSI, as Volkswagen do not position it as a sports model in their lineup. They can't get an exception for the GTI though as it is marketted as a sports model in the lineup.

    But as jayjay pointed out. The discussion is pointless. The cars are what Volkswagen make them and call them, and the original question was is the engine the same or have changes been made, and that's been answered

    Then so is the 103TDI Comfortline, as just with the 118TSI Comfortline, it's also available with the optional "Sport Package" with the sporty Tyre Pressure Monitoring Function and other "Sporty" features like that

    In the end, it doesn't matter what my opinion is or what your opinion is. Volkswagen call it a Comfortline. Insurance groups and P Plate restrictions etc are all based around that.
