I'll throw my 2 cents into this thread...

I've ordered a Toyota 86.

18 months to 2 years ago I was within a bees ***** of ordering either a Polo Gti or Golf Gti. Initially it was dealer arrogance that put me off - several VW dealerships treated me like they were doing me a favor. After I read more about the niggling issues, DSG failures, and the cost outside of warranty, I slowly backed away.

That said, I still like to log onto Watercooled every now and then for several reasons:
1) It's one of the best enthusiast websites I've come across. People on here were nothing but helpful and enthusiastic.
2) I still love cars of all shapes and sizes.
3) VW are producing some fantastic cars - they just need to acknowledge and address the perceived quality issues.
4) Enthusiast websites tend to make you hyper-aware of the problems that exist with a model. If you experience them yourself then I can see why that would taint your view of a brand (I still struggle with Mazda for that reason) but for prospective owners they can be a blessing and a curse if you read too much!

I reckon you are being pretty tough on the OP, his VW has been extremely troublesome to the point that he has ditched it in favour of a Hyundai. I don't see anything in his post that glorifies Korean cars in fact he states his decision was made "with heavy heart", seems to me he has had a gutful of the issues with his VW and is seeking something more reliable even though he acknowledges it will be boring.

Exactly. Hardly trolling.

There is nothing worth than a slavish fan boy with a chip on his shoulder.

The i30 is a good small/medium car. And reliable too. Far more so than his experience with the 118tsi (and he is not alone in that - a number of government agencies used to get them for staff and now don't due to appalling reliability).

That model is going to impact on the reputation of VW and will probably cause some loss of sales.

Think VW have finally woken up. The fact that this variant is not being registered for the Golf 7 is a tacit admission that it was 'shyte'.

Yet in the Mk7 the 'Turbo and supercharger' greatness you speak of is being discontinued - funny that.

That was a genuine Samsung holder for the Galaxy S2. Was great. Only now I've got the Galaxy S3 4G.


Just because the engine had some problems or was expensive I wouldn't call it that bad (this is the *Appreciation thread* remember, there are other threads). You have to be amazed at how much bang (power) for you buck (engine capacity) when you tune one of these. There must be plenty of other 'normal' owners of these cars who don't post on forums and so on who haven't had any issues. Plus those with the Polo GTI and equivalent Skodas. With the early MK6 7spd DSGs it just appears that they cut the operating margin too fine and a number of people exceeded it as they hit between 20,000 - 30,000kms.

It doesn't bother me so much that a couple of 118's were lemons as much as how those customers were treated. With such a big company you'd like to think the problem could escalate quicker and get them back on the road with an emergency loan car within a day or two, or just replace it.

I bet there isn't anyone in Australia who has managed to reach 100,000km without major engine trouble with the 118 TSI and they should be designed to go three times that distance. Their Jap opposition do that easily. A fantastic engine when performing as it was designed but an owner's nightmare. It's really added to VW's poor reputation in Australia for reliability.

My parents have 140k on their 2010 mk6 2.0tdi dsg, and the engine is as tight and smooth as it was when new, the only problem they've had is an a.c compressor which just failed but was replaced under warranty..

It probably helps that their car isn't a 118TSI with the 7-speed DSG.
