    118TSI - Appreciation & Thoughts

Lol. Thing is the those alfas Jeremy is so fond of seem to have small issues that are numerous as opposed to the large few toastedvw has experienced.

It's funny that after owning this engine n tranny combo that I now would like to try out an Alfa to see what all the fuss and "character" are about

The reason I am considering the Mk7 is because despite the troubles with my car I still absolutely love the drive (when its working) and when you consider the other alternatives on the market nothing else really excites me. Yes the golf is expensive compared to other similar sized cars but the handling, interior spec and general build quality is so much better IMHO than the other alteratives. I am sure there are a heap more owners here that will agree with me.

I have also just ordered my wife a new Passat Wagon for much the same reason, the alternatives were for want of a better word ......lacking. I took her to so many different dealerships to try other brands and then by showed her a Passat and she was like "OMG I love this" so what do you do.

Agree completely. VW's are very nice cars to be in, but aren't the best in reliability.

In fairness to the brand, on forums you mainly see the negative comments outweigh the happy owners.

They just get on with driving and dont worry about what others are doing.

If you work out how many cars the VW group produce in a year there will only be a small % that have faults.

Some of the drivetrain faults can be attributed to the way the car is driven.

To wit the threads that moan about harshness at redline gear changes etc.

Hotting up engines and pushing trannies beyond design limits etc.

I would sooner just drive mine sensibly and make it last without having it spend time getting fixed.

Whilst all mechanical things should be capable of accepting a certain amount of stress there is always a limit and if you push hard enough often enough you will certainly find it.

Then its into VW to get a free fix because you thrashed it.

    Waits for flames LOL

Amen! You have one hell of a sweet ride there. So why is your nick Ryan R? Should be Ryan 118

    After

Also I'm around 151kW now instead of 118. 0-100 happens in about 6.5 seconds

I'm not aware of any > 2011-build 118 TSIs suffering from this problem. There are a handful of other issues too (squeaky water pump, DSG problems), which haven't been completely resolved but are less prevalent than they used to be.
So as a potential shift from Polo to Golf Cabrio...what should I be aware of? I've got a dsg and love it/understand its quirks - at least in the Polo. I'm looking at a new from Dealer Cabrio and test drove one today. The engine seems a peach and the ride topped my Polo which I still marvel at.

Your interior changes make a huge difference Ryan - looks great. Are you thinking of replacing the DSG shifter from the current "T-Bar"
style to the smaller rounded style used on the GTi/R as well or not?

If so, then thats the only other thing i can see that i would change (if it was my car).

Thought about it, but don't feel like melting and twisting the plastic to move the switch from East to North. Also, the ones I've seen for sale appear to be the cheaper ones that are on the new normal Golf's and not as nice as the ones in the GTI. But yes, besides some red stitching and GTI badges there's not much separating me from the next model up. Maybe I should call it a 151 TSI Highline and pretend it's a special European model if I ever try to sell it

I wouldn't mind getting a red T for the rear TSI badge for that extra subtle differentiation but haven't found one. I think there might be a Tiguan with one.
