For some reason when i am in my car i never line up" with an R at the lights. Last night i didnt get to line up but was directly behind one.
I normally go straight at this traffic light but since it was turning right i thought to follow suit. The right turn leads directly to an uphill.
I have always said in various posts that the GTI and R kicks the twincharger at higher speeds but i thought the twincharger was competitive at suburban conditions.
My wishes came true and the R floored it.big puff of smoke from the exhaust to validate the quick takeoff. I actually gained on him during 0-30. By the time we hit 70 we both backed off and i was at the rear PASSENGER dior.
Thats right... I took the bigger circumference turn and still closed the gap.
Of course this isnt too scientific and only a gtg with an R and GTI could validate my claim, but having driven the R and GTI on the track i really do feel they are more laggy at the lower rpm and lower speeds where the twincharger is instant full torque.
Whilst we both floored it on takeoff I didn't mash the pedal to the ground nor did I redline the car. I might have gone to 5000 rpm in 1st and high 4's in second. It may also be the R didn't go the whole hog either. Nevertheless he wasn't exactly relaxing and sitting around either.

Have you got Stage 1? I've followed an R on a cruise before and kept up except on the tightest on bends (Reefton spur)
So an 8.0 second (0-100) car kept up with a 5.7 second (0-100) car doing 0-70... I don't think he'd have been pushing all too hard somehow. I've found that the outside lane at traffic lights is usually quicker, get the power on earlier. Nice job all the same.
At 6.5 seconds to 100kph from a 1.4L engine I'm already struggling with traction and have already destroyed one engine mount. I think I've got plenty of power.
That and I don't know of any Stage 2 options for the 118TSI. A DP would be nice but I think custom made is the only option, and I don't recall them being cheap.
Let's go with real world figures. A few ppl are able to get 7.7 in the 0-100 and most of the R's instrumented tests I have seen are closer to 6 seconds. My other point is that I am arguing the two charger is as strong if not stronger at low rpm with no launch control at lower speeds. Beyond 60kph the 2 litre turbo will hit its straps for sure.
A better comparison might be the 0-60 kph times but I don't know what they are for the two cars. Agreed that we were both spirited but not outright flogging it. I think he backed off at 65kph to let me pass to see what I was driving. I floored it to 80 to oblige but he o retook me back as I slowed for the turnoff.
