Some good info there, particularly regarding spark plug gap.

Why anyone would use feeler gauges to gap a spark plug I have no idea. Wire gauges are best & you use them as a simple go-nogo gauge. If you feel rsistance you don't continue.

2nd Hand 118 TSI buying advice

    Hey all

Sorry if this has been covered before, I did do a search and looked through the 2nd GTI thread, but it didn't seem relevant to the 7 sp 118 TSI model.

Please direct me to the relevant thread if there is one.

So I'm looking to buy a Golf wagon with the 7sp 118 TSI motor. Until 2 days ago, I'd never heard of the issues with the DSG. I currently own a 2007 Audi A3 with 1.8 - 118 TFSI motor, 6 sp Auto, and its been great for us, and our experience owning this has led me to look at the slightly bigger and cheaper Golf Wagon. We're also considering an Octavia with the similiar engine ( 118 or 103 Motor ).

Needs to be less than $20 k, which is giving us a few options of a 2011 Golf comfortline wagon (MY11) over on Carsales, with around 50k on the clock.

I've had a look at one, and in the log book, its always been serviced at the dealer, and last year had a recall done.

Looking at the thread about the DSG issues is terrifying, but how common is the issue actually? And on a car that has had the recall done, how likely is that the issue will show up? Or is it just safer to hold on for a 2012 model?

    Any advise would be appreciated.
    Cheers.

118tsi Golf engine isn't the same engine as the 118tsi Audi or Octavia (both have a 1.8L with single turbo and are generally reliable). It's a 1.4L twincharger. It's a variable quality piece of rubbish. You might get a good one but probably not.

The DSG is a 7 speed dry clutch. It's also a piece of rubbish. Unfortunately the Octavia has this abortion of a gearbox mated to the 1.8tsi.

Do yourself a favour & either buy a manual or look at an Octavia vRS or Golf GTI as they have the wet 6 speed DSG which is very good.

If you look at one of the AWD variants (yeti or tiguan) they have a different 7 speed DSG and it's reliable as well.

Buy a 118tsi twincharger with DSG7 at your own risk.

There are heaps of threads - they are usually near the top of the Polo or Golf forum but also in the Octavia & Superb sections for the DSG7.

Thanks for your reply. So did the engine not improve after 2012?

There has been no change to the basic design and build quality of the engine. They've tinkered and made minor improvements.

There is a reason why that engine is no longer offered in the line up.

    Read the links I posted.

All the lower power/torque petrol VW/Skodas have the DQ200 7 speed DSG. This is only half the problem as the 1.4l twin charger 118 in the Golf/Jetta has been one of the least reliable engines that VW has produced.

As brad said do yourself a favour and read the threads/links before you go buying a car out of warranty.

For ~$20k you should be able to pick up a TDI wagon, Octy RS or Tiguan/Yeti with much more reliable engine/transmission and decent amount of boot/loading space.

Thanks for all the advice, I think you've prevented me from buying a Lemon.

Friend of mine recently bought a new Jetta with the 118 engine, I wonder how he'll go down the track - though at least he'll have a warrantee.
So are they using the same faulty gearbox in the new 103 TSI Golfs and Octavias? I don't get how they could still be selling a product with so many issues?

Octavia RS is top of my list, just doesn't seem to be many for sale around Brisbane. I'll have to wait for a good one to come up, but hoping to get something before the end of financial year. I should test drive a TDI also

Despite VW's denials the same problem still exists in the MK7 Golfs ..... good friend of mine with a 2014 Comfortline 90TSI DSG has the dreaded DSG issues .... had clutch packs replaced at 16000km and now at 25000km needs a full gearbox replacement!

Do not buy a DQ200 DSG equipped car 2nd hand and if you buy new plan to sell by the time the warranty runs out .....

    Hey guys,

Have any of you fitted a GFB DV+ to your car? I've tried fitting it into mine, but there's a plastic tube that gets in the way of the sensor clip of the diverted valve that's stopping it from plugging in.

Has anyone dealt with this issue? I'm still waiting for a reply from GFB. I can get a picture if needed when I get some free time.
