Hi prise, did you have the water pump replaced ? I picked this car over the GTI because of the reviews from Australia's leading car magazines, didn't trawl the forums until after I laid down the deposit. Anyhow, it sounds like it's only a problem if prepared to let it annoy you.

No squeak on mine, 2300km so far. But some of the posts here suggest that it's fixed in more recent builds; mine is Feb 2010.

Had my waterpump replaced at about 4000kms, all was good. at about 6-6500 now and it's back. i'm not a fan of the garage it went to, but it has to go there for warranty work, don't know if it was a crappy part or if they're trying a pull a shifty on me. but i'm not pleased. and i'm one of those who finds the sound annoying. I didn't fork out as much as i did for a car which squeaks like it needs an oil....

Mine has the chirp, but now there's occasionally a scraping sound at the same time.. Like a spring being compressed in a tube and released... THAT one is driving me mad!

My Golf is March 2010 and the bird chirps started around 5700km. My car's done nearly 7000km now and the noise is getting more frequent than when it first started - booked this Thursday for a check.

Mine (with DSG) started at about 6000km and disappeared after a 1000 km. I've now done almost 13000 and no sign of a come-back. I didn't mind it to be honest as it wasn't obtrusive.

It would be interesting to find out what % of the owners with an annoying ''chirp drive manuals as opposed to DSG's. I have a theory that the combination of load and RPM required for the 'chirp' to occur is less likely to occur with a DSG in 'D' mode.

Went to VW on Thursday to enquire about the infamous bird chirps. The VW mechanic seemed familiar with the problem and he quickly pointed out the supercharger as the main suspect - water pump solenoid which is associated with the supercharger clutch assembly. They will need to order the part which will take about 2 weeks. And also the mechanic noted that this may not be the solution and lovely bird chirps may come back even after replacing the part - just like some members here mentioned...
