    ka-ching. it's not VW...but the map originator

And, lag concerning turn instructions will have a lot to do with satellite reception.

This morning, my RNS lagged so much, it got itself totally lost. I did a soft reset, turned system off (ignition off, key out) and then finally after re-starting car and unit...some time up the road, the sats found went from 3/10 to 8/10

I have often had problems with the satellites 'disappearing' and causing the unit to go into headless chicken mode.

And, I can't (personally) see what the problem with "Stay on this road for a long time" announcement is. So what...it just lets you know that there will be no turns for a quite a while. Big deal.

The map lags because the chip in the unit is not giving precise enough data or someone has used the wrong datum which can give misplaced locations. I cant zoom in under 25m and thats about how far out the turn instructions are. Just far enough to be a PITA if streets are close together Headless chicken mode could be caused by different GPS aerial locations Lots have trouble with under dash units.
Mine has Sharks fin and hasnt done that YET
My Tomtom says "Stay on this road for xx km" so you have an idea when you are getting near your turn. It also gives the name of the street you are turning into which can be a big help in unfamiliar areas.
Have been caught with two streets really close and ended up a blind alley, when had it said the name I would have turned at the correct one
    So why cant VW

Because it's Sensis (& Continental), NOT VW.

What I meant was, If Tomtom, Garmin, Navman and even the cheapies like Navig8r can get proper text to speech instructions from map makers, why cant VW They also have more accurate positioning when moving, another drawback with these units.

I understand...however, VW contract Continental to make the units. VW don't manufacturer the RNS.
Then the maps are derived from Sensis (for Australia anyway) to suit the Continental hardware/software.

The market for these units is limited to the particular manufacturers who pick them up as 'add-ons' and try to sell them as OEM items.

OTOH..Tomtom/Garmin et al manufacturer their own units, source the map data from within and have a much bigger audience to sell to. therefore...more income, so more money spent on development and new maps.

It's demand vs cost. And the Continental units and their inferior mapping files are not selling anywhere near the number of units as the small hand-held/windscreen jobbies.

It's our choice if we want a fully integrated with the benefits (already discussed before) compared to a unit which in some respects may outperform the "OEM" unit, but has security issues, leaves a mark on the windscreen, can impede driver vision (saw a beauty the other day...GPS was positioned right in the drivers line of sight...WTF???)

We have a top of the range Gamin in the Polo. It's ok....but nowhere near as versatile (IMHO) as the RNS. Each have their quirks and foibles.

So looks like there are 2 different V6 ISO's floating around, identical size, one is bad and gives the symptoms I explained (missing road names, missing textures when zoomed in etc..) one is good and looks identical to v5 (But i guess more up to date roads etc..)

The way to tell if you have good or bad is to check the hash of the ISO file you downloaded.. If you don't know how to calculate the MD5 sum of your iso, download HashTab for windows and then right click the file, properties and check the Hash tab, it will calculate the MD5...

    Bad ISO
    RNS510V6Maps.iso
    677 MB (710,770,688 bytes)
    MD5: 8A9F7D1F4F464CBCDCF7C9FC7337214E

    Good ISO
    RNS510V6Maps.iso
    677 MB (710,770,688 bytes)
    MD5: 6E344E4E1EC7923A34D54E90CB330B7C

Thanks to everyone for your help, especially FJ Steve for his ISO.
Fantastic result. Maps working beautifully for me too now, although haven't had a chance to try Nav yet. Looks like I was working with the bad ISO originally also.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, especially to FJ Steve and you Ferni. Great to find such cluey and helpful people on this forum.

have reuploaded the GOOD ISO to here

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3Cr...it?usp=sharing

With regard to my prev post I would like to think that as the VW group is about the 3rd biggest manufacturer in the world they could spend a bit more getting the VW stuff to a better standard. Dont see the same complaints about Audi stuff so why do we have to put up with second best.

Same with DSG boxes Seems the Audi and other brands in the group are Ok but the 7 sp in VW has endless problems

If not its old firmware. My unit was about 8 months older than the car it had 2760 in it and was a C unit

There is a lot more than country Victoria not covered and yelling wont do any good and they are unable to be customised.

Hopefully you can find your way around your local area without a map LOL.

Lastly I would never use my home as a flagged address. The car gets stolen and they know where to go to clean the house out .
As the unit is deficient in being able to do a reversed trip there is not much point
Thanks, HB, did that this morning, but in my rush to park and get to train I must have scribbled down some numbers wrong. And I *only* got the numbers

One I have says "5238" and the other, which I'd swear had something with "map" in front of it says "7920". Looking at the firmware sticky, I should have seen something with a "4" in front, but may have looked at wrong lines. However, is that an up do date version for the map data?

    Cheers!

Here you go the top line is the model number Mine is actually a C but shows up as a D after upgrading.

The 4120 is the latest firmware and the 7920 is the latest maps

Older firmware can be 2760 or 3820 or 4020

    ...

Huh, I would have sworn it's the line that says 4020 on your photos is the one that says 5238 on mine. Will check again later.

What's also befuddling is that, if Sensis is the map data provider, why our address is unknown. I just check Sensis and we're in their database.
