    MK5 GTI - RCD/RNS510 installers (Brisbane)

    Hi All,

Looking to upgrade my headunit in my MK5 MY08 (I have done a bit of research)..
I think my two main options are RCD510, or not sure if worth going to the RNS510 (hdd, dvd, gps), wether or not those additional functions will work well or it might be easier to stick with the RCD just so I can have the SD card slot & colour touchscreen at least is my main goal.

So rather than DIY is there anyone or any workshops in Brisbane who have much experience installing these units that I could get them to do for me (I can buy the unit off ebay etc). I would just rather put it in the hands of someone in the know with VWs and pulling apart the car safely (my pride and joy obviously) and if they need to adjust any VAGCOM settings to get the bluetooth and/or steering wheel buttons working to the best they can?.

So its MY08 at least no canbus upgrade needed from what I've read.

Anyway, advice and contacts welcomed please.

    Regards
    Joel.

    Thanks, shot him a PM.

Noticed you are in Brisbane too, you recommend him or you do installs at all?, have just now been reading about your units you sell the ANS models.

Do you mean Audi VW Upgrades or readerr0r? The former is a professional business dealing in RNS-510 and latter AFAIK is an individual but with extensive RNS-510 experience. Either are more than capable of fitting your unit.

I have the equipment to do RNS-510 installs but as you would have noticed I don't deal in RNS-510s - I can do VCDS coding but I'd just be using public forum info in any case. My ANS series units don't require any coding.

I'd imagine readerr0r as an individual would charge a bit less than Audi VW Upgrades, but you should probably check for yourself

I'd recommend you to try the install yourself though, unless you're hopeless with DIY. There's a detailed instruction video here:

And you can just ask someone to do the VCDS coding for you, which many people are happy to do just for a beer.

yeh, removing the dash bits for a radio is a piece of cake. Its a great opportunity to de-rattle the area too as while you may be just used to noise from that area pretty much every Mk5 i've been in squeaks and creaks there.

run down to supercheap and grab yourself a set of torx bits (dont need to be socket set, the key type version is sufficient) and plastic trim removal tools. Dont even bother using anything else, the trim removal tools make the job so much easier and safer.

You will probably need the antenna adaptor. I got mine from austral and they had it for me in 24 hrs. Less than $50 which i thought was reasonable. part number 7L6 051 551.

I plugged my replacement radio in and it worked straight away. The only extra function i am using is the Aux in (3.5mm jack). I thought about buying MDI but I couldn't justify it. Also I think I'd need to get it coded if i went that way (even though the RCD310 self-scans on startup to figure out if it has MDI or not...).

Have you ever used the RCD/RNS510? I simply wasn't impressed with the touch screen or the navigation. Couldn't see why I'd pay money for something which is average at best. (personal opinion )

Sorry I didn't actually see the AudiVW upgrades under Sunshine coast/Brisbane.. I've PM'd him now but I was earlier referring to rearerr0r.

Also thanks for the youtube vid, it does make it look a bit easy so will decide if worth taking a crack at it myself, just as you mention I will need to get the vagcom coding sorted at the end of it.

Hi mate, thanks for reply and info. What unit did you install?.
No I haven't used the RCD or RNS 510s just from what I've seen on the net about the two.
I think price wise its going to be a better move to stick with the RCD510 for $400ish, whereas the RNS is going to run me about $1k... just for dvd & hdd (as I don't care for the rev. cam or sat nav features).

So this antenna adaptor, what is that for why does this need upgraded?

RCD doesn't require any coding, straight plug and play on MY08.

Keep an eye on here for RCD510's (in the classifieds) they come up around the $300-350 mark regularly. Make sure you get one with a security code.
Also, the RCD can have a reverse camera input, it is the "mustard" 26 pin plug on the back. units without the RVC plug tend to be a bit cheaper.

    Well that makes it easy.

Also your last quote I don't think came out right but are you saying the antenna adaptor is for the reverse camera?

Yes I could get brand new aus/bosch version for $350 RCD510, or maybe worth spend a bit more for this ANS810... decisions.

Just to make life harder for you, remember the new generation of ANS units coming out too

Sorry, I quoted it really badly
The antenna adapter may be needed, basically on the older units there are two distinct fakra antenna plugs, on the later units they have a twin plug. This can be fixed by trimming about 3mm of plastic shrouding off one plug.
The reverse camera input is the 26 pin plug I referred to.
