The Tig is actually my wife's car which I take out on the odd occasion (VWW cruises mostly). She just wants the digital speedo in the display and to be able to set speed alerts. Unless anyone can come up with something more by the end of the weekend it looks like I might just fit the old Mk6 wheel back in until we get some more info. At least that way she'll have working buttons during the week.

@James - there is a chance i will be in Canberra next Sunday - maybe saturday afternoon/evening as well. How long would something like this take ? alternatively i could leave my MK7 MFSW wheel with you.

Not sure if tigger can wait that long though!

@marcrae19 - I'm not sure what I'm up to next weekend, but if you've got the steering wheel installed in the car then it'd probably take about an hour to access the CAN Gateway, hook up some diagnostic kit and log what happens when you operate the buttons. It'll take less time if you have already physically accessed your Gateway for some reason in the past, as it means fewer cables / relays to move out of the way first.

Without the wheel installed in the car we can't check what's happening between the wheel and the controller which is the key to figuring out the next step.

@tigger73 - I've got the Mk6 electrical current flow diagrams on my server at home somewhere - I'll take a look if I get a chance over the weekend and see if there's a pin layout for the MFSW connectors.

    That would be the best.

Well I found a thread over on vwvortex with the mk6 steering wheel pinout and it's kind of making a little bit of sense now.

So for the yellow connector (F350), pinout as follows:

    Pin 3: Airbag
    Pin 4: Airbag
    Pin 7: Ground
    Pin 8: Horn
    Pin 9: Lin bus
    Pin 10: 12V

    For the black connector (J453):

    Pin1: GND
    Pin2: 12V
    Pin3: Lin
    Pin4: Horn (in)
    Pin5: Horn (out)

The horn signal looks like it may go via Lin as well as its own signal.

Now all I need is the pinout for the Mk7 Steering wheel control unit (black connector) and I should be able to get this sorted....

After trying a number of different wiring options today, I've gone back to the standard Mk6 wiring (with the horn routed through the black connector rather than going direct to the yellow one).

I've come to the conclusion that the wiring is not the issue. The paddle shifters are working fine and these have to come through the LIN bus so there has to be comms working. Also the fact that a few of the buttons actually do some stuff means that there;s no real problem with the hardware.

So that leaves me either with the fact that there's a VCDS setting that I'm missing, there's incompatibility with the Mk7 buttons/LIN messages and the Mk6 SWCM or there's something else I've overlooked.

So I've come full circle and ended up back at the same place as the start of the day. However I do understand a little bit more and have managed to cross a few things off the list at least.

Having a think on it overnight it may be that the simplest way of getting this steering wheel going is to replace the buttons/controller with ones from the latest Scirocco - which has the same look as the Mk7 but has the buttons from the Mk6.

My hope is that these buttons would fit into my new Mk7 wheel.

The risk with these sorts of retrofits is always compatibility of hardware. Without some equipment to decode the LIN signals to determine what button press causes what message in both mk6 and mk7 button controllers (module in the steering wheel that generates the LIN messages), it's a little bit of guess work. I now suspect that the people that have this working either have a newer version of SWCM or have somehow jagged a Mk7 steering wheel that is backwards compatible with the Mk6 SWCM hardware.

For others reference the hardware I have in the Tiguan is a highline module. Scan details as follows:

Tigger - matt from vagnostics in the UK has everything working bar illumination. I'm talking to him at the moment to see what type of cost would be involved to get the required harness / wiring and support to put ours in.

I wonder if there is a way to provide constant illumination? I drive with my lights on during the day so it wouldn't bother me.

Scratch that. Matt actually has installed the sirocco wheel. He also also installed our wheel but without cruise control.

    Installation of a Mk7 Multi-Function steering wheel + paddles into a Mk6

I seriously don't think the problem is the mk7 wiring harness. I've tried about every single wiring combination possible and have come to the conclusion that the mk7 wiring harness would work as-is. Though I ended up leaving it modified to the same pin-out as the Mk6.

What is going to be of most value now is to find out what the part# for the mk6 SWCM and also for the Mk7 button controller that the guys in the UK are using.

I'm not too concerned about illumination right now. Car mostly gets used during the day anyway.
