Confused about RNS510 revisions - compare two

How similar are these two RNS510? If I go for his Skoda one and I limited to old firmware? Doing this to get the correct button light colour for my car (Skoda is green, VW is red).

I have the following VW RNS510 in my Skoda. I bought it new off ebay in 2012 from Ireland:

I've been discussing swapping with someone that has the following Skoda RNS510 in his VW. He got it off a friend that took it out of his new 2012 Skoda (he put in an aftermarket radio) That's what I've been told:

I've looked in the thread that has firmware & hardware version info, but I still can't work out if they are similar.

I have a VW revision H. The H in the '1T0 035 680 H' says that right? Or is it the 'H61' in the hardware version?

So does he have an ancient Skoda revision B? - 3T0 035 680 B? Or a revision H (the H61 hardware version)? and they aren't a fair swap? Looking at the manufactur date there's only a few months between them.

If it's the hardware version - is an H61 of any significance better than an H60?

Looking at this page it appears the VW and Skoda RNS510 revision letters aren't in sync. When people refer to 'revision B' or whichever, they're talking about the VW version, which is back in 2008-9.

    Versioni RNS 510

So now I need to know the differences between H60 & H61.

According to the stickers yours is newer so stick with it.

My 2011 car has a RNS that was 2 years old from new

If you look through the threads you can do custom boot screens so maybe can change the colour as well

You can change the display colours, but that's not what I mean. Mine has red buttons (the light in them). The other bloke has a Skoda unit which has green ones (like the rest of my Skoda dash). Even though mine is a bit newer, it seems to only be not even 2 months difference and one hardware revision. I don;'t know if there is any difference between them.

I'm mostly concerned about the revision version though. Does he have the equivalent to an ancient revision B, or can't the Skoda revisions compare to the VW?

His has barely been used as it got taken out of the original car fairly early - he had to get a radio code off ebay to try it in his car (cheaper than putting it back in the original car and getting the dealer to do it).

Just to close this, it seems they are very similar. I can't tell what difference there is. The H60 seems a tad slower to react to buttons, but I could be imagining that. So it seems it's only the differences between the VW and Skoda colour schemes:

On screen graphics & button light colour - Skoda green, VW red

Startup splash screens are branded according to the car.

They do require subtely different firmware for the steering wheel buttons to work in the Skoda

Those 2 are less than 2 months apart age wise. The build date shows on both Skoda Dec2011, VW Jan 2012.

For your Skoda, I'd go with the Skoda version. Everthing will just be that bit easier doing upgrades etc plus the colour scheme will work without you haveing to fiddle with the firmware images.

The VW one is mine, the Skoda one is another forum members. We're swapping so we get the right one for our respective cars. Now I have the steering wheel buttons working I'm happy to swap.

Their has to be some difference between the units despite them being so close in age, Even if it's only a day difference they still have different hardware numbers.

I've been using the VW one in my Skoda for nearly two years and din't think anything of the colour scheme and button colour - until I put the Skoda one in - it's much more suitable for the car. Interestingly the Skoda one has 'Skoda Columbus' printed on the surround. The VW one has nothing.

You could swap over the facias if you wanted to maintain the rest of the system, but it requires a partial teardown of the system, could result in damaged ribbon cables and the systems are essentially exactly the same.

Yes I'd thought to do that if I couldn't get the steering wheel buttons to work. It would mean at least the button lights would be right, but not the onscreen graphics (there's quite a lot of difference between the red and green on screen stuff). Or if I'd found a major hardware difference between the revisions I might have done that (to keep my new one).

It's quite easy to do - a couple of Torx screws and ribbon cables.

You can change the splashscreens, graphics colours etc with VCDS.
