    MY10 R36 - upgraded 9W7 Stereo AVRCP Bluetooth works a charm!

I just changed out an old Fiscon Bluetooth Plus kit for a 9W7 from MFD3.com. (Ive still got the original factory oem cheapo BT kit too, that's the first thing I changed)

The 9W7 went straight in with no coding or wiring changes and I now get AVRCP text display, MFSW control and stereo Bluetooth Audio.
However I already had the factory mic wired for voice control with the additional Fiscon mic for its BT module and had upgraded firmware a few times so Im about a version or 2 behind.
The factory harness was already wired for stereo BT too which was a bit of a surprise and I removed the Fiscon mic during the install.

Changing over I only had to change 1 pin assignment on the green block on the back of the radio from pin 3 to pin4 to get the factory mic routing in and out of the RNS 510 so both BT and 510 work from the one mic. The voice recognition seems to be better for phone dialing on the 9W7 compared to my old setup where I used the RNS voice recognition.

The star button on the MFSW now controls the 9W7 voice control and the "i" button on the RNS 510 controls the 510 voice activation. I know you can change the long coding with vag-com to disable the phone voice control to re-enable the 510 voice control from the MFSW but I mostly use the voice control for phone stuff anyway. As I said the 9W7 seems to do better with voice recognition than the 510 and I can still push the 510 info button to do voice control of the Sat Nav. (I use Siri on the iPhone for most of my navigation now anyway)

Loving the BT stereo streaming with text display and MFSW controls.
It even works for iTunes Radio and my other music app Jremote which streams my music from my home server running Jriver media centre 19. (think of it as a private iCloud service streaming my own music and playlists) I used it going on a drive out to Orange NSW and back over Easter and it worked flawlessly over a mixture of 3G and 4G Telstra mobile on the iPhone 5S.

Just thought anyone considering this upgrade should know its definitely worth it! I used to run a BT kit plugged in to the AUX port in the centre console just for iPhone BT streaming and its so much better being able to just get in and go, and it all works. Being able to control it from the MFSW rocks.

Just did my 45k service and all is good. Recently fitted 19" 255/35 contisport 5P on 19" replicas and they are a great upgrade too! Still 50% brake pads/disc. Next 60k service is the big one with the DSG oil change and a few other things. Loving this car, might be a 7/8 year keeper!

(must resist urge to do Dynaudio retro oem upgrade... must resist... )

    Hi

Interesting post. I have same car but in a wagon. And I'm pretty sure I have the factory base model BT system as it only allows hands free calling and also stereo BT music streaming - but I get no phone data on the screen, nor can I skip tracks on BT steamed audio... I have the * button on my MFSW, but just mutes whatever audio is being played at that time. I also have the "PHONE" button on my RNS510 which does nothing other than mute the audio - same as the * button.

But I sure would like to have all options woking as you have achieved.

I have "voice control" also, but I can't get it to work properly either - its a complete waste of time, but I'm not sure it functions either way.

Are you able to send me a link to your updated BT hardware at all?

    Rgd's

    Andrew

    From here > .::MFD3::.

You might also need the second audio channel cable and run it as a microphone link cable between BT unit and the Nav as I already had that extra cable from my Fiscon Plus install.
The 2nd audio cable pins and wire is the same as the mic extension - I have a spare 2nd audio channel cable as I ordered it but realised after opening up, that the harness already had stereo BT harness from factory, but I can confirm the wiring and pin connections are identical between the mic extension cable and the 2nd BT audio cable. (I should mention you need the extra mic extension so the single mic can run into and then out of the nav to the BT module - this cable came with my Fiscon plus kit and the 2nd BT audio cable looks identical)

Below is an alternative. I havent tried it but Im going to order one for use at home. It gives MFSW and text display via the MDI ipod cable from a BT dongle. Not a bad solution if all you want is BT streaming with text and MFSW. Doesn't give you phone on the nav or FIS but its also a lot simpler!

Just noticed MFD3.com have the proper voice control cable too if you need it.
My mic extension cable from memory might actually be a shielded cable too but I cant remember, the connections and cables at each end look the same but if memory serves I think its shielded from 1cm from each end onwards which would make sense when you think about it. The factory mic cable is definitely shielded too.

Mine has dealer fitted kufatec fiscon BT, I can access phone book both on RCD 510 and MFD. Kufatec Fiscon BT menu also shows in MFD when I switch menus. BT music streaming is fine but I don't use it. Having a 16GB SD card in RCD 510 is enough for me and I don't use the MDI at all.

9w7 is the best kit but so far the fiscon is fine for me.

Interesting read guys. I have just installed an RCD510 and am keen to get Bluetooth in the R, but funds are a little tight at the moment.
One question to Passat R36, you have no problems with the 16GB SD card. I thought that the RCD510's could only read up to 4GB. I currently have a 1GB and it is a little annoying but I would love to have more storage.

I have no issue with the 16GB SD card. My RCD 510 is the Bosch one which has the RVC compatibility for reference. I will buy the genuine boot handle RVC later to DIY.

I had the 9w7 installed post purchase, and one of the funny things that kept happening when I paired my phone on start up, was that the phone streamed audio by default without fail. It took me a while to figure out that it was a setting on my phone that did this. So just an FYI.
