Not really sure what's going on there Reece, the majority of us left our tape in plastic bags that I had in the car with me. Can't speak for everyone though. I do apologise on behalf of the others if they didn't clean up after themselves.

Two things - I ran into one of the kombi owners at work yesterday. We chatted about the show for a few minutes and as I was leaving she says "Oh . . . Weird question, but at the end of the show a bunch of the guys were covering their cars in tape. What's that about?"

Secondly - Yes. It is called a parmy. Parmi is an accepted variation. Nobody here knows what a parma is.
Come to Melbourne and you'll be just as confused as we were in Albury.

Lol I bet there were a fair few air cooled guys at vits with multi thousand dollar paint jobs and didn't have to "tape" their paint hahaha

My weekend started early last week, as I'm from Albury, so decided to head down early to spend more time with friends and family, so here's my write up of the trip

EDIT: My flickr is stuffing up, so I'll come back and update this post with photos later.

    Tuesday
After making some final adjustments to the Mk2’s ride height, double checking everything and packing a milk-crate full of tools and a spare alternator (just in case), I waited for a break in the crazy weather up in Sydney to make a dash for Wollongong to meet up with Nafe before driving down in convoy together on Wednesday morning, me in the Mk2 and Nafe in the Trailer Queen (1958 big window bug). I was meant to meet up with the Newcastle boys (#dakratpartysquad Brad, Lach, Hayden and jbomb) to cruise down, but Nafe could only come down Wednesday and would be making the trip solo otherwise, so decided to cruise down with him instead. It was slow going coming down from Sydney, and there was about an inch of debris from the storm covering the whole road going down Bulli Pass, so I was dodging that as well as the usual ****ty NSW roads. Made it to Bulli unscathed, but felt as if I was driving through a sandblaster as I drove along next to the beach.

    Wednesday
Check oil and tyre pressures before leaving Wollongong at the respectable time of 10am. The heavy rain stayed with us until somewhere between Marulan and Goulburn, but we averaged about 90km/h with the Beetle leading the way. I crossed my fingers as we came around the corner to Goulburn where the local constabulary usually sit under the overpass getting bored and waiting for someone to do something stupid. We got a few cruising shots in the rain.

Drove through to Yass before making the first pit stop. As we pulled up a local policeman having lunch looked at us long enough to make us a bit uncomfortable about what was going through his mind. We downed our lunch and got out of there, not without me hitting my control arms on the metal speed bumps behind KFC (learnt a better route through there on the way back).

The Beetle was using a bit of oil, but otherwise running like a champ and cruising nicely around 90-100km/h. The Mk2 was enjoying the relaxed pace only sucking 6.9L/100km on average for the whole trip.

Next stop was 10km out of Yass on the side of the road. Nafe hit some roadkill or something which knocked the passenger side spat off his rear wheel guard. It went flying into the air before I drove straight over the top of it. We both pulled off the road and I ran back a couple hundred meters looking for it. Luckily it had ended up on the side of the road out of the way of oncoming traffic and was only a little scratched up and bent. Nafe took the other spat off and we kept driving.

Made one last stop near Holbrook at a roadside stop where we took a few pics and downed some homemade, ‘air-cooled engine-warmed’ spinach and ricotta cannelloni pasties.

    Saturday
Get an instagram from Brad, “Oi Elbo, where are you??? We’re here.” #dakratpartysquad were out on the town, so I drive down to catch up with the fellas and enjoy Albury’s finest establishment, Paddies, or Beer Deluxe or something or other, they call it now. We stuck to the Beer Garden, talking **** with Hayden and Andrew (jbomb) fighting off the, ahem, more mature women, who were obsessed with getting photos with the mullet and the flamingo party shirt. Lach dogg was disappointed that no one was digging his loud christmas style sweater until one chick complimented him on it and that seemed to give him his second wind after the long drive down. Brad was told to remove his beanie multiple times and discovered that if you go outside you have to line up again to get back in, even though you have a stamp :\ Dunno what the stamp’s for then… We hit this dance floor for a bit of a joke, then I went home and left the dakrats to party into the night and hoped I’d make it home after hearing about a Scirocco in Dean St getting pulled over earlier that night. Props to the local police for being easy on most of us.

    Sunday
Up early in the freezing cold to wash and vacuum the Mk2, then it was off to Hovell Tree Park. I stopped at a cafe in Dean St for a killer coffee and chorizo toastie for brekky, and the guy there said he hoped it was a good day for “VW’s on the Murray,” crossing wires a bit there, but good vibes nonetheless. See a few Burrito Boys and speak to the guys in the sedan with 3-spokes while holding up traffic in Dean St, “cya there” I say, but didn’t get to meet them by the end of the day, despite running around catching up and chatting with so many great people. Next time I’m sure!

Pull up and the first face I recognise is Jye’s, who’s Passat is parked a few cars over from me. Have a chat and catch up on what’s happened since DOVW, before catching up with the Newcastle boys and finding out how the rest of the night went. Because I grew up in Albury, I run into heaps of mates and people I know and I feel like I have to give the tour to every one of them. I try and introduce them to it and let them check out all the cars themselves so I can chat with as many people as I can. I talk with a few others, the guys in the Mk1 with the card table and sleeping bags piled up in the back (which I thought were just props for a display) who came up from Melbourne and turned the weekend into a camping trip along the way. Cool guys and girls and a great idea. Chat with the German guys with the Red Mk1 GTI, great looking car and fantastic Zender Sports wheels (for sale too… “if only I had the money,” I say). Meet a few more people and put faces to names from forums and instagram. See Brook’s B4 with those rad hub caps but miss catching up with so much happening and so many people to talk to.

I was stoked that the Mk2 received 2nd in its category and that people were enjoying seeing it there. Hopefully get some more Mk2’s coming down next year. After the presentations #dakratspartysquad hit the road for the long drive back to Newcastle, I cruise with the fellas for a bit on the freeway before sending them on their way, which I’ll follow up on Monday. Arrived back in Sydney Monday night, exhausted from a great weekend, with many great memories, a few new faces to names and a bit sad it was all over so quickly.

Thanks to Reece and all the volunteers and sponsors for making the day possible, and thanks to all the guys and girls who brought their cars along for the good times and great memories.

Highlights for me were: catching up with people and putting faces to names, the burgundy Mk3 (such a nice paint job and colour scheme with the BBS’s too), the Red Mk1 GTI (classy, period perfect german build), the couple of Notchbacks parked up on the far side of the park and the Single cab Splitty were my favourites.

Cheers to all for a great weekend,

    Elbo

Thanks mate! Found out I'm working on the day of the nationals but only from 11am-3pm, so will make it to whatever part of the weekend I can!
